Welcome to NAM.

That said you can't go wrong with any fully synthetic from Mobil 1, Castrol (I like the German one with the green top), Redline or Royal Purple particularly if you go with reasonable change intervals.

Artoo gets his fluid and filter changed every 5000 miles with either Mobil 1 or German Castrol and at 80,000 miles and is still going strong. I take the time to check plugs and fill and check everything at that time too. Learn to do the change yourself and with a pair of ramps it won't take more than an hour if you take your time and are deliberate.

The bottom line answer to your question is that when you ask about oil preference you are stepping into a firestorm. Check out Bob the Oil Guy for everything you would want to know and then some.

I tried Amsoil on the last change. The interval is coming up and I'll send some off to Blackstone and see what's up. It is good stuff but since it is 100% synthetic and not derived from oil vapors, you loose the delicious motor oil smell.

My mechanic exclusively uses Amsoil for all our Mini's in the Mass Motoring Club.

I use Mobil 1 Full Syn....it's a true full synthetic, and cheaper than RP or RL

I use Royal Purple, if not then Amsoil, and then lastly Redline.

Has anyone actually backed up their "best oil" with data (Used Oil Analysis)?

I've used:

German Castrol 0W-30 (ACEA A3/B3 & BMW LL-01 spec'd)
BMW Castrol 5W-30 (ACEA A3/B3)
Mobil 1 0W-40 (ACEA A3/B3 & BMW LL-01)

All work fine here in the Arizona desert. I've ranked them in order of preference.

Note, the US made Castrol 5W-30 does not meet the ACEA A3/B3 & BMW LL-01 specs.

Use the search feature, plenty of threads about oils.....

I'd go with Amsoil 5W40 European formula for hot climates.

I use Total 10-50 oil on my Mini with lots of hard driving and some track days. My girlfriends car I put in Total 5-40. Both of our cars love it.
