R50/53 MINI vs. Raccoon = New Engine
#1
Part II: I found out today that my block and head are damaged beyond repair, as you recall, when I hit the raccoon, my radiator was destroyed but due to where it happened I had no choice but to drive the car to a safe spot, the engine was running close to max temp most of the way, I guess the Mobil 1 did it's job as best as it could, cause she didn't lock up. Anyway, I'm going to have to go through the break in period again, I don't know if they will be able to re-use the blower, if not, I'll have to get pullied all over again, which would be a royal pain. I hope to be back on the road in a couple of weeks.

>>I wonder if that racoon's familly had life insurance...
No it didn’t, the premiums would be too high living near a road.
Being a great car hunter myself, killing everything that gets near a road, I’m sorry about the engine.

We hit a small Racoon at 70MPH while in Virginia a few weeks ago. We were very lucky as no damage was done to the car (I managed to swerve as much as possible around the animal) thanks in part to the Colgan Custom front end bra the car had installed at the time and perhaps to what appeared to be the smaller size Racoon.
It was a scary experience nonetheless and a good reminder to go easy on the speed when driving in unfamiliar deserted roads late at night.

Either (choose one or all):
1. That was a UBER 800 lb raccoon
2. You were driving 650 mph and involved in a head-on collision with the UBER raccoon, or
3. The MINI's innards, meaning engine, is kinda flimsy.
4. None of the above.
Sorry about the situation. And I am truly shocked to hear that the engine is totalled. Makes me want to install one of those high-pitched deer warning devices.

>>Either (choose one or all):
>>1. That was a UBER 800 lb raccoon
I think the creature was over 30 pounds but that is just a rumor- no body was ever recovered. It was dark, happened quickly, and it was unsafe to stick around searching in the dark in the middle of the night.
>>2. You were driving 650 mph and involved in a head-on collision with the UBER raccoon, or
More like 65+ mph, nothing unusual. Just bad luck.
>>3. The MINI's innards, meaning engine, is kinda flimsy.
The MINI's innards are quite good. What happened as I interpret is that the radiator was compromised and ceased to function hence no cooling power. The engine was asked to propel the occupants back home rather than stop (wasn't the overheating light on???). The engine overheated and fried itself.
>>4. None of the above.
This appears to be the correct choice.
Perhaps the critter was wearing a kevlar vest and helmet and still poking around the countryside looking for another MINI to notch up on his helmet.???

Thanks for all the kind words, the engine was sacrificed in the name of safety, far from being flimsy, I was able to drive 26 miles with no coolant and the engine did not give up the ghost till I shut it down with the key, I really had no choice, 4am, torrential rain, unlit 2 lane roads and no cell phone coverage to call for help, plus I had to make a 6am flight to Chicago at all costs, I don't think I could have asked for anything more from my poor Ziggy.
I'll have to shell out the money for a new pulley and install, but at least I'll have a factory fresh engine to work with, I just hope it's as stout as the one that died, my car seemed to be one of those factory ringers that you read about.
