R50/53 Do you still wave...
#552
I used to wave all the time when I got mine years ago, and I always got waves back in the city. In the valley where I live I was the only one who owned a MINI and always got people commenting on it at stores and gas stations. While I still get comments, in the past year there are 13 other MINIs in my valley and there is almost 1 in every parking lot in the city. I always wave. Sometimes I get waves back, but I ALWAYS notice them and look to see if they're checking mine out. 90% of the time they aren't looking, whether MINIs are no longer a rare site or they are too focused on the cars ahead of them. It is nice when you get a responding wave or light flash though. Always makes me smile.

You know... I think it has alot to do with the gas/economy crunch in the past 2 years. People used to buy them for the cars, for its history, personality and uniqueness from every other sedan and hatchback out there. I know thats why I bought mine, and everyone who waves back or flashes their lights. But in the past 2 years there have been alot of people that have bought them for their mpg rate and economy. To them its just another car. I would be willing to bet this is prevalent in used MINI owners. 2 years ago everyone waved. In the past year 12 other MINIs have shown up in my valley, no one waves. They have them for the economy, and could just as easily be driving anything else. I'd be willing to bet they don't even know that an entire subculture exists around these cars...
On a side note, I am constantly amused at other non-MINI tuner owners that spot me and the slight customizations I've done to the outside of my car, and immediately try to impress me with their cars. It amuses me when a tuner pulls up next to me and beeps, revves their engine, or blows past me on the highway and then immediately slows down. I never bite, but I doubt they have any idea how powerful these little cars actually are, especially after you put a few aftermarket upgrades in them.

I still wave no matter what.
I am impressed with the power of the car. Before you know it your really motoring down the road. I am still in the break in period and have only hit 5K on the tach maybe twice since I got the car so I really have not been able to use the full power range. Another 300 miles or so and then I can use the full power range.
I get the ricers and such as well. But I'm getting too old to take them on. I would rather take em on in the corners anyway.

I think I scared this girl yesterday on the road as I sped up to catch her and honk and wave RIGHT NEXT TO HER. She didn't even look over.
That's just sad. I wanted to start a club up here because the closest club is 1500 miles away, but from the lack of waves I get, they give me second thoughts.

It's really hard with blacked-out windows to get any attention at all. All the MINI'S coming at me head on get a whole handed wave...and I get em back. Sticking my hand out the sunroof works too but I have to remember to open it first. I think the people in the Dk Silver S I whizzed by on a local straight away thought I was a maniac and I'm not sure that was a wave they were sending my way.....hmmm.

I mean i dont stop and talk to other mini owners, unless they look like tuners, or i want to know where they got their wheels or somn. I always wave, everytime. Most guys wave back not all, women suck and never wave back.
Its cause they dont pay attention to their surroundings when they are driving, and i always no anycar on coming or going the same way i am so

I might have given up the wave a while back if it were not for threads like this. Just knowing there are intrepid, MINI-waving do-gooders out there is enough to keep me energized and optimistic. That, and I do get a return wave now and again. In then end it may not be much, but it is enough, by golly!!
