Fuel Pump fail - Ouch$$

Well the fuel pump went out in my 05 Justa.
The good news; went out in my driveway & not during the 400 mile trip the day before.
The bad news: $800 to replace (& as a precaution, rebuild the fuel filter with a kit that is way cheaper than new filter).
Guess that extended warranty might of been worth it... too bad I didn't get it.
I got a major tune up coming soon as well.

Found they have an extended warranty on fuel pumps of 07 & 08 minis (10 years/120,000miles). Would be pissed to find out it's the same pump as earlier cars and yet they don't cover us.

My neighbor's Cooper had the fuel pump replaced. Cost the same.

Just wouldn't start (no fuel).. cranked over etc.. I've heard they can fail anytime, going down the road, whatever. It's not related to anything the driver does.

Don't think it's a big issue on 1st generation minis, nothing like the power steering fan/pump problems.

Well had to wait several days (over weekend) for new part. Closest dealers didn't have them in stock. It arrived Wednesday and was damaged Now have to wait until next week.
I know they're expensive but you'd think a dealer would keep at least one in stock.

$800 for a fuel pump. Ouch!!! I remember the days when it was $200.

You say there's a rebuild kit available? Why didn't you go down that route?

Pls provide link for rebuild kit.

Good luck with getting the car back on the road again.

Is that $800 just for the part or with labor?

Has to be with labor. Rmeuropean has the pump for $206.77. These guys are great. I have ordered tons of parts from them and they offer free shipping fedex even I usually get parts before I need them. I just did my fuel filter. Not a hard job. But did spill gas in my mini. Luckily I had removed the carpet before. Any home mechanic can replace the fuel pump assembly in a couple hrs with minimal tools or skills. Oh and if anybody has questions when ordering parts to go mini, oem, or aftermarket. Go with oem. I ordered oem and mini brand and the parts were made by the same company. There was an extra $30 charge for a mini box.

The repair is at a local independent BMW shop. The rebuilt kit is for the fuel filter (vs whole assembly).
I'll give him the RMeuropean reference as his current vendors obviously suck.

For the hours of labor I figured the fuel pump was in the tank or somewhere difficult to get to. Live and learn.
