Make sure you get the BMW Long Life Spec Oil (BMW-LL-01) if you go for the Mobil 1. The oil at the dealer is this spec. Not all Mobil 1 oil is this spec.
I go the recommended oil change intervals (15,000 or so) and the LL oil is a must if you do this. If you change it more often the LL spec might not be as important.

It was reported on white roof radio (a mini podcast) that mini oil did have some seal swelling agents in it..kinda like high mile oil...but it was never verified...i usually run mobil 1 with a 5000 mile oilchange...i think the euro version and the gold topped 15k extented drain version might both meet the bme spec...
mini oem oil is likely euro castrol...a TRUE SYENTHIC...what mobil 1 WAS a few years back before the rules in the us changed, alloing highly refined dino oil to be called syenthic....look up yhe group base oils the oil is made from...north america/us is the only place this is allowed....that is why many folks look for german/euro bottled oils...much better stuff sccoring to most tests...but if you change you oil frequently, like me, it should not matter.
