SES light, EML light, DSC light, RPM drop

Hello:

Need some help here, on possible issues with my 2002 Cooper S.

About a month ago, the SES light came on and the car would shut off for no reason. The code said throttle body was the problem so I had ir replaced, and the car ran fine.

Last week, similar but different issues cropped up. While driving, the SES light came on, EML light came on, and DSC light. The car RPM's dropped to limp home levels, engine started to misfire, and I shut it off in a parking lot.

Waited a minute, and restarted the car. The SES light stayed on, the EML light went away as did the DSC light. The car ran just fine after that, with no issues, but the SES light remains on.

The repair shop says that there is a bulletin from BMW # SI M 12 04 02 that states that along with the throttle body, you need to replace the Engine Wiring Harness (Part 12 51 7 533 103) and this costs $800.00. If that does not work, than the DME has to also be replaced.

Does this make any sense. My car has 109K on it, and quite honestly I am not willing to spend 2K on getting this worked out. Any ideas or thoughts would be very welcome.

Thanks for teh help.

My car had the same problem. I replaced the intake manifold MAP sensor ($59 from MINIPARTSMASS; $109 from Bill Jacobs) and everything was fine.

Now I'm getting SES under WOT ... So I'm also replacing the upstream MAF by the airbox.

Update

Today, I started the car and the SES light had disappeared. I took it in to the shop anyway, and had him read the code. While it was sitting there idling, it suddenly started to surge and drop idle RPM's and the SES light and EML light came on again. He ran the code reader and it was P1125.

The throttle body was replaced three weeks ago.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks

So, here is the final fix. It needed a wiring harness with the new throttle body. $800 later, no codes or lights!

Thanks for posting this. I'm having very similar issues with my 2006 S (83k miles). She's also experiencing a huge loss of mpg. :(

Sorry for bring back a old thread, but my question: is Does this problem only happen in the "S" models. I have been dealing with a similar problem with my 03 MC in the last couple of months and this only happens once in a while. It happened yesterday morning and it was a cold morning...this has happened a couple of times in the summer, so I think it's because of the cold weather.

Okay so like in the morning, I will pull my car out of the garage, go down the driveway into the road and when I put the car into drive it lurches (I'm guessing because of high rmp's) then all of a sudden the ses and eml comes on the rmp's drop and then the car cut off or shuts down...when this happens, I put it park then turn it off and turn it back on and the lights go off and everything seems okay...Does anyone have any ideas of what is happening to my car?
