2006 MCS - Check Engine On - EP Code

I've read and searched and so far no clarification on the problem I am having.
I have a 2006 MCS automatic. Totally stock no mods (yet).

She has been running good, until last night when on The Whitestone expressway the gears would not engage.

<part 1- No Check Engine Light>
I accelerate and all the she does is rev. I coasted to the service lane shut the engine down, waited a few, started her up again. This fixed the issue momentarily until 5 minutes later again gears werent catching, so i put it into SD mode and the tranny THUNKED and was stuck in fourth (max 55 mph).

I kept it @ 3500 rpm and was doing 47 and got her home to my fiance's. Parked the car and it sat for 2 hours.

<Part2 - check engine light>
Started the car and the Check engine light on, and EP Code where the middle LCD display tells you what gear you are supposed to be in.

The car is in now in Bayside NY and if i had to get it to a service center i'm thinking of having it towed to the Freeport Hassell Mini service center.

I bought this car used from a dealer 3 years ago(no warranty), but thoughts?Should I take this into a local mechanic or just spend big $$ and have it towed to the mini service center?

Just wanted to see if anyone has experienced this and what entails to fix and costs involved.

Sorry to bum everyone out whos reading this, i'm quite heart broken right now :(

My suggestion would be to have it towed to a local REPUTABLE mechanic who can fix it. You might even pay less and the problem will be fixed properly.

I can't think of any at the top of my head so I hope someone else will chime in but there are definitely ones in NYC and Northeastern New Jersey. I would suggest you post in the NJ and NY regional forums to find that information.

Look up shops by state at www.bimrs.org
It's for BMW shops, but the shop I go to works on MINI's as well.
I hope it's nothing big. How many miles are on the car and has the trans fluid been changed?
