How well does the porous sliding cover block the sun?
Does anyone know if the 2003's will change over to a solid sliding cover?

thanks

Welcome to the site - I don't think there will be any chages to the 2003 models. You have a couple options. 1) Put extra tint on the roof. 2) go with a perforated 3M product that works like tint, but your able to add a graphic to it. This will block the sun plus give you a design on that big open canas that screams to be customized.

When MINI adds a solid shade and fixes the rattle complaints in the dual panoramic sunroof, I'll be interested in one.

Thanks.
That has been my only concern - burning the top of my head!

NO!! Do not put a tint on your sunroof, it may cause it to crack. There is a forum on it HERE. Hope this helps. I bet a aftermarket solid sunshade will come out, but from what I hear I does a pretty good job. Mine is coming in Nov!! Motor On

I HATE the sunroof screens! What a dopey design. It really gets hot in the **** pit.
I'm hoping someone comes out with an after market cover.
No rattles or other issues though

I still think the whole cracking issue is overblown.. Like i posted earlier, my wife has a Chevy Cav. with a tinted sunroof, it's over 7 years old, sits outside all the time (no garage in the old apt, and the MINI gets the garage space in the new apt.) and no problems...

I live in Florida and have no problems with the current sunroof solution, when it's really bright sun, you can leave the roof open and close the screen which cuts down on the glare but lets air flow. I love the sunroof.

Welcome, spiper! I have the sunroof here in So California and it's just fine. The sunroof comes from the factory with high quality tinted glass which blocks out harmful UV rays. You will not get sunburn unless you sit in the sun with the sunroof open for hours. To each his own, but I LOVE the large sunroof and am very glad I got it! Goodluck in your tough decision.

For the most versatiliy I'd suggest the following:
Then if you want no sun, keep the roof closed, mesh shade closed and the safe tinting or roof decal will block out nearly all sunlight and heat. If you want fresh air and little sun, open the roof and keep the mesh shade closed. If you want maximum sun and air, keep the roof and the shade open.

I love the sunroof, the mesh shades work great and no rattles at all.

I've had 4000+ miles with no rattles and no heat problems here in Sunny Florida. I love the sunroof and wouldn't change a thing.

I've found the sunroof to be one of the most distinctive features of the car. Everyone loves it from both inside and out. Of course, I do too

And while I do (did) have the rattle, I found that 2 1/2-inch pieces of the fuzzy side of velcro applied to the inside of the wind deflectors took care of that. Use black velcro, and you can't even see it when the roof's open.

(((I have a small rattle when the sunroof is in the raised in the back position; really not noticeable; no noise when the roof is open; and a slight whistle from the blower fan when the roof and windows are closed, but I would not opt against the sunroof-- it gives a panoramic view any time of day or night, a great window to watch the rain through, and adds an awesome effect to the stereo.

I was told explicitly by the technician that I should not close the mesh screen when the sunroof is open (it's OK with the roof in the raised position). He had to replace several that were sucked out by the wind at expressway speeds. Have others used the screen with the sunroof open without a problem???)))

I've not had a problem with the screen up with the sunroof open... in FL, if you drive during the day, you need it. At higher speeds (interstates and such) it bows upwards a little more, so I'm more hesitant to use it then, but to be honest, I don't like keeping the roof open for noise reasons at those speeds.

    Steve:

Yes, I've driven often at highway speeds with the roof open and the screen closed. While I can't simply say that your technician is an alarmist, I don't think that screen sucking is a big problem

Thx! The technician said it had happened on at least one car, as I recall. It could have been a problem with the screen on that car... unless the tech was just screen blowing!

I may call him and see if this has been a problem he has seen in other cars.

I COULD see this potentially happening. The screens are very thin. I've seen TWO ripped ones at my dealer - one in the showroom and one on a demo car. I don't like to use it much with the car in motion. I only use it while driving when my wife is in the car and there is the potential of debris such as passing a dump truck or passing a construction place.

You can really tell a differance when the screen is closed and roof is open. It cuts down the sun a lot while still gettingthe air. I have taken many 2-3 hours trips wih roof open and screen closed with no problems. I really wante to get roof decals but the sunroof just made the caqr in my mind, so I went with the roof and am very happy I did.
I live in south Florida and have had not noticed increased temp in the car from not having a solid shade. In reality, there is so much window space on the car I do not think there would be much differance between cabin temp with or without the sunroof.

I love my sunroof! I haven't noticed any problem with temperature when keeping the mesh shade closed. I love it since it lets just a bit of sun in, for better lighting and an airy feeling. The car has so much glass anyway, so the sunroof with shade closed doesn't really add much the the temp inside.

I did have the rattle from the wind deflectors rubbing against the sunroof when closed. I got two pieces of black velcro and put them over the wear marks on the wind deflectors. Problem solved. I would rather do this than have the dealer disassemble the headliner.

My personal opinion is: if you like sunroofs, you will LOVE this one! It was great to have it open while driving through Teton and Yellowstone parks!

Has any one replaced the perforated screen with a solid fabric screen yet? Or do I have to be the first? Seems simple enough. When I drive on the highway with the sunroof open and the screen closed, it wiggles around in the wind, but I wasn't aware it could rip or get sucked out of the car. I'll keep that in mind from now on, thanks!
