The Infamous Windshield Stress Crack

Okay so I was hosing down my 06' R53 today when I hear a loud *POP*... I could not figure out what the hell it was until I got into my car. The windshield had a huge crack from the top middle of the windshield going down and splitting into two cracks. So I was wondering how I should go about dealing with this because my car has been out of warranty for a while now and I have this odd feeling that the Mini Dealer is going to deny everything and blame it on me...

I just received the recall "class action lawsuit" letter that everyone has been getting too. Does anyone know any updated news or if they have really been recalled?

Thanks!

I think you'll be paying for this replacement. I read the class action notice and it only covers for replacements done in the car's first 5 years or 50,000 miles, basically the warranty period. So if you're beyond normal warranty you won't get any help there.

Strange how this issue basicly wentaway about 5 years ago....and a letter vomes out...and suddenly...it starts happening.
Thinking WAY back, if i remember right, MINI was said to have changed the specs on the glass at one point due to the cracking....
A mini whinshield (if you have ever seen one done) is held in place by some funny looking spacer clips, then the sealent applied....they can sometimes be reused, but often get cut/destroyed when the old one gets removed. A good, mini familar mini whinshield installer will have a spare handfull of theses clips/spacers....and pillar covers too!!

Rapid temperture change can make a tiny, unseen pit/crack rapidly expand on any windshield....
Up north, it is common to have a tiny chip or crack expand rapidly when the defroster is applied....on any car.
heck....every year or two we hear a story of a transplated southetner tossing warm/hot water on a windshield to defrost it or to remove ice after freezing rain....often it breaks the windshield.

I'm pretty positive it was from the heat change, it was pretty hot in the car when I turned the car on. I turned the car on and let the car idle while I hosed it down with water (super weak pressured one). The crack came from the very top of the windshield from under the black roof lining thingy... It's pretty coincidental that my windshield went just a couple weeks after i received the letter. conspiracy!? o.O

I would suggest letting the temperatures even out before washing your car. I'll have to check my insurance to see if they cover it. I hear they usually fully cover windshield "repairs."

Anyone know any good aftermarket windshields? I was actually thinking of putting a clear tint in the front, maybe it will hold everything together better?

*i'm from socal... braaahhh*

you could do it your self if you are somewhat handy. its really not that difficult contrary to popular belief. ever wonder why its always some ghetto redneck doing the replacement on your glass?
