Clunk in rear, need ideas

I have a clunking sound coming from the rear going over bumps. I jacked the car up and checked the suspension and exhaust and everything seems tight. Added electrical tape to the hatch loop as well. Still have the clunk. It's driving me crazy because I can't seem to find anything amiss.

snug down the end links on the rear sway bar. if they are tight then replace the sway bar bushings.

Could be the rear shock mount bushings.
I chased a similar sound for months. Thought it could be anything from the sways to the one-ball mod bouncing.
Turns out it is the upper shock mount.

Way at WayMotorWorks helped me with this.
He is also sending me:
- Koni FSD shocks
- Powerflex upper shock mount bushings
- Ireland fixed comber plates
- Powerflex control arm bushings
- OEM front sway bushings

Mine are doing it too. I narrowed it down to the rear strut top mounts. Everything else is tight and in good shape.

The clunk is only over pronounced ridges in the roadway, never depressions.

It's not the rear strut top mount bushings, they still look new.....I'm leaning toward the RSB bushings now. Will update after I check those..

Don't be mislead by looks alone. Run over with a spanner and check for cracks and splits. That noise is comming from somewhere.

If its not the strut top bushings it probably is the sway bars.
That is the much easier and less expensive fix.

I've got that same sound. Not looking forward to pulling the rear strut to check the mount. I guess I'll do what I have to do.

It's an extremely easy DIY. Remove the wheel. Remove the lower strut mount bolt. Remove the top two strut mount bolts, and you're done.

Unless you have to replace the strut mounts. (But you are correct to check is not that hard)
If you are going that far, you likely need struts also.
So, then you are in a little deeper even though you are correct with what you have written.

I'm already running on bilstien struts with h-sport springs. I have this week off work so I guess that will be my project.

I do hear some sound from the rear when I release gas paddle quickly after an acceleration

the car sometime have a slight jerk sometime not, but can easily hear some sound from the rear area

is the sound from pipe, or some other things?

I've got a similar sound. Close to a rattle and I can't tell the side of the car. I replaced the upper shock bushings and the rear sway bar and bushings. I even had my wife drive the car in the driveway while I sat in the open boot. It's been driving me nuts for months.

Problem solved!! Boy, I feel stupid. Instead of looking at the easiest possible fix, I took the hard route, taking apart rear suspension looking for worn strut top bushings and RSB bushings to no avail. Clunking was driving me nuts and everything was good and tight.

Yesterday I replaced my rear hatch supports. When I went for a drive I noticed about a 50% reduction in clunks....hmm. So I go back and adjust the rear hatch bump stops which when twisted counter-clockwise they increase their depth. That helped some more. Kept adjusting (a lot!) and finally reached about 98% reduction on the clunking. I'm not sure what else I can adjust, but at least I wont be driven nuts by an occasional clunk.

Do you have a photo of the rear hatch bump stops you are referring to?

This is intresting. I might be tackling this on the weekend, if only I knew just exactly what hatch bump stops or supports are :/

I get very similar sound as yours, any clue, I'm inclined to believe it's not the tail gate.

I rolled out the window once trying to hear where the sound comes from, actually I feel it comes from the rear wheel area, which worries me a lot.

any inputs will be highly appreciated.

So I figured out my issue. I had a bad end link on my sway bar that needed replacing. Easy fix and made a world of difference. Now I have to try and fix that annoying sunroof squeak.
