R50/53 motor oil selection
#1
hi everyone...
the saleswoman at the dealer said that i the first oil change for my MCS won't be until 12 or 15k miles. BUT she mentioned, have some motor oil on you and check the fluids every once in a while and add as necessary. i didn't think to ask what kind of synthetic oil...
i'm running a trip from chicago to nyc next week and thought i should have a bottle of motor oil for the trip. please tell me what brand and sae rating synthetic oil you guys are using..what you recommend..so forth...
it would be greatly appreciated!

>>Castrol Syntec is the type of oil that MINI uses and it has a a very high, read crappy, volatility rating. Syntec is also not synthetic and that is why you have to top off the oil.
I'm going to use Mobil 1 in my Mini. I've used Mobil 1 in my 1999 Tracker and it purrs like a kitten.

I just called my MINI dealer and he said that he'd put any oil I want in there as long as I bring it to him and it's a high grade synthetic oil. That's great since now I'm not stuck with Castrol but can still have it serviced my my dealer. Also, since they only charge $48, it's pretty reasonable (not sure if it'll be cheaper if I bring in the oil....hmmm....hope so!)

Changing the oil is the best thing you can do for your engine. It is cheap, easy, and nothing else will reduce engine wear like clean oil. Full synthetic, (Mobil 1) every 3k miles. Yes, you can run longer between changes, but why would you? Cleaner oil equals less wear. I wouldn't run past the first 1k miles without an oil change, as that is the most critical period, and the time when the oil will be most contaminated by particles from the engine during the intital break in.
