Odd sound!

I own a 2005 Mini Cooper Base r50, which is at 75,000 miles and recently went through transmission and thermostat changes. I have been getting a strange knock type noise when either switching gears or when its about to stall. What could it be? Anyone have this problem??

Have you checked the hydraulic motor mount (passenger side)?

I have and it's good. Happens on some bumps on road too.

I know this may sound kinda obvious but i had a similar issue with my car and one of my hangers on my exhaust broke off causing the exhaust to make a strange noise on bumpy roads and when shifting gears due to the face that the motor shifts the exhaust around and it would rub on the frame.

+1 on the check the lower engine mount.

Inspect it for crack and damage.

Upper engine mounts 12/2003- on
Look for leaks , black oil residue that will drip down the sides and onto the body. Some times you can miss it on the back side.

I would also look at the transmission mount ( since you were working on the transmission area) you might be missing buffer pad or the bushing is bad.
2 x the buffer pad.

Example , there are ones for manual and have a year split in 7/2004.

You might want to check lower control arm bushings sway bar bushings and end links as these can make noise when shifting and going over bumps also.
