NYS Inspection--legal header/cat options?

Hey Guys, I'm new to NAM, but have been around the car scene for a while, (240sx, 300zxtt). Both of these cars were older than 10 years so they didn't have to go on the sniffer. The 05 S I bought has a header and test pipe (in addition to a bunch of other goodies)

Other than paying out $550+ for an aftermarket "OEM" style unit, has anything else passed NYS?

Thought about trying a Magnaflow 49state universal, but it'd be at least a $150 gamble.

Car also has a Borla Cat-back if that helps or hurts any fit issues.

Any help appreciated, I have two weeks for compliance.

NYS doesn't use a "sniffer" on vehicles built after 1996, it's all done through the onboard diagnostics OBDII

Correct, and perhaps I used that term loosely. However, without a cat I'm still throwing P0420-catalyst efficiency. (and p0171 bank 1 lean, which could be from test pipe or dirty MAF sensor)

Get a spacer and space out your O2 sensor. Something like this :

Has anyone used this with success on a Mini?

It might get the CEL to go away, but it's going to fail a visual inspection, and I don't care to know what the consequences are for cheating an emissions test.

I found this in another thread https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...r-help-005.jpg

Would love to go this route if anyone has an OEM header available. From what I understand the header seam cracks, but I'd just need the cat off of it.

As far as not getting a CEL YES i have used something like it and after a bit of messing with it I don't get any codes.

Only other option is to go with your current header & OEM CAT, the CAT is what's giving you the code, not the header. This would solve your code & visual problem.

One of the biggest problems I've read about was the amount of heat produced by the car and the tendency to "burn out" cats rather quickly. I installed a Flashpoint unit from waymotorworks a few months back and it works flawlessly and I have passed my NYSE inspection with no problem. It might seem as an "expensive" repair but it's a lot less expensive compared to the dealer but looks and sounds better than the factory unit. You get what u pay for and some things aren't worth doing twice. Especially a header install in this cramped engine bay. G'luck.

Thank you, exactly the type of response I was looking for.

I'm at a cross roads of finding an OEM unit and fabbing a "bolt in" OEM unit, or scrapping my current set up for something like Flashpoint or Magnaflow, both are comparable in price.

My intention is to find out which of the aftermarket set-ups people have actually passed a NYS inspection with.

As a side not, I would hope I can offset some of the cost of a aftermarket unit by selling the header that is already in there...not sure what it is to be honest.

BTW, the rear flange of the Flashpoint unit, is that just a flat flange? Previous owner said he kept having problems with exhaust leaks from the doughnut (is there a better name for it?) flange.

might not be the answer you're looking for, but if you space the o2 sensor and there are no codes and then go to the right inspection place it's not a problem. I passed inspection for many years on a car with no cat, running leaded gas, meth injection, full stand alone ems, the works. A friend helped create a work around so I had no codes and I always posed with flying colors. Now if anyone had popped the hood or looked under the car I would have had issue, but I knew where to go and who doesn't bother doing that. Anyone local to you should be able to give you a heads up on what shops are good.

We've had great luck with the flashpoint, and it does have a cat in it. Direct replacement for the stock unit, the rear flange is the same shape as a stock header so it will bolt right up to the exhaust.
