R50/53 Aftermarket Chrome w/3M Tape
#1
Does anyone know how those chrome mirror rings or door cups or other pieces hold up using the 3M tape that is used to apply them? Washing after washing, will water get behind the items and harm the paint finish and will they still look new after years of wear? How would one remove them if necessary?

I don't think so, but it also depends on the quality of the adhesive made to hold the chrome part.
If you are thinking of installing chrome mirror caps, go with the MINI genuine ones. Reason? Because the MINI OEM chrome mirror caps, snap right in place, where the factory caps used to go (You can keep the factory caps as spares or you can sell them, just as I did) and it will give you a fantastic clean look.
There are some aftermarket chrome mirror cap imitations circling around EBay and those are total junk because they use double sided tape and stick right over the factory caps.....the result...the tackiest, cheapest look you can possibly achieve. Oh and the aftermarket caps are like $150 a pair. The MINI OEM ones are $123 for the pair at your dealer parts counter.
I know people that installed the chrome door handle cups and haven't had any problems with them. I personally don't like them..they tend to look tacky to my eyes. I like chrome but not in excess.
