Can you listen with the door panel off and hear which part the grind noise comes from?

First, try a bit of a silicone lube on the upper window rubber seals...might help a tiny bit...
Also are you finding TINY BLACK bit of debris stuck like static to the window?
In mid 2005, mini changed the window motors... earlier ones had a tenenency to fail...usually after you saw bits of black stuff...was actually a dealer warning when I got my car....back in DEC 2004...to call them if I saw any...and they would get it in to fix it.

In looking at your photo 2, is that big star washer ( #3 in the diagram ). ... Is it touching and binding up on the metal part of the door?

it could be that the cables could be getting tangled where they meet with the motor, when I replaced the regulator and the motor the cables where about to pop off, since you are able to move the window up and down I would take off the belt line window trim and move the window up and down that way you can see it from above, IF YOU DO have to remove the star washer you will need to lower the window about half way otherwise it will be imposible to remove the washers or pegs with the window in up position even with the special tool, I don't know where you are located put I'm in nyc and have the tool if you need it if not you can do it with an 5mm hex key, if the window is stock in the up position that's a problem. Removing the pegs will allow you to remove the window and adjust it as well as maybe troubleshoot the grinding noise. I hope it helps this is the Pelican parts article that i used to replace mine. good luck

So its making a grinding noise of the driver side, on the window regulator near 7, 8, and 9 in the diagram.

Front left Window Regulator -6/2005

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/51337039451/ES94200/

[/URL]

Look at the side without the window motor right here:

Hooked to the metal cable this window glass connection ( does not have the motor ) and is nylon which sides on the metal rail. Sounds like the cable has disconnected from the main mount and grinding on the that nylon. Or the section where the main mount connects to the rail is hung up on. Gunk and wear build up on the rail causing not to move.

Thanks & Hope that helps.

You won't, you have to take the whole thing off to see it, is best if you have someone put the window up and down while kind of stick your head in there and see if you can locate norrow down the noise

My advise would be yes while the window is working, but check first to see if it needs lube, if your motor is good then just change the regularor I got mine from ECS since they had the best price but shop around, also I would stick with OEM but that's up to you and your budget.

Im gna order a regulator and attempt to do it myself, im Gna follow the DIY over at Pelican

Question: why do u recommend sticking to OEM? I saw a regulator on ECS for $80! And it looked really attractive!

I don't know I just like OEM stuff lol that's just me, nothing wrong with the other brands that I know of, 80.00 it's a good deal and like I said if the motor is working that's a plus, I did mine following the Pelican parts article, I did have cut the the wires from the regulator on mine in order to take those pegs out because my window was stock in the up position but in your case you don't have to.
Keep track of the bolts and take pictures, as many as you can to keep track of how it was before, also make sure to note the orientation of the motor, do it wrong and you window will go up when you push down lol. Good luck

thanks for the info i just tried my window and it slides up (with the grinding noise of coarse)...so sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't which means that the motor works. IDK if i should buy a whole new regulator or take my current one out and try and find out what the problem is...decisions decisions

Umm do you mean that sometimes the motor works and sometime it does not? Or is it that sometimes it makes the grinding noise and sometimes it doesn't . If it is the first one your motor could be on its way out, if the motor stops working at any given time, do the Bang method and hit the door where the motor is located bet the speaker and the door handle that should revive the motor for a bit, it works for a while, there is a DIY here in NAM about cleaning the motor instead of putting a new one in, I just went the changing the whole damn thing route lol, the dealer wanted 750.00 and I got the parts for less than 300.00 for both regulator and motor, I could have gone the non OEM route but this is something that I don't want to do twice. It's not difficult is just tedious.

1.I keep my window up at all times.

2.When i roll it down, it wont roll back up, making a cracking noise. Something is obviously stuck/old/ or not working

3. the motor works fine

it does come with everything and I didn't know about the repair kit, the new regulator includes all, minus some plastic taps at the bottom of the door to adjust the angle.

The window repair kit:

http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/51337177925/

This is for the clip on the back of the window regulator slide , you can just make one them out in the bottom center picture. See how it clips on the back of the new one. I remember being a fix for the rattle issue.

The supports tabs mount to the bottom of the door and are adjustments for the alignment of the bottom of the regulator.

#4 in diagram

Hope that helps.

Good luck on the install.
