Intermittent code: P0130

Vehicle: stock '06 MCS with 47k miles.

I've had the P0130 code appear randomly for 2 months now. It's triggered only during cold starts and goes away after about 3-4 cycles. Car works fine with no performance issue or increased fuel consumption.

After some browsing, it looks like this is a pre-cat oxygen sensor issue, assuming there's no leaks at exhaust/CAT gasket to foul up the A/F ratio reading.

I kinda hope that it stays on so I can bring the car to the dealer for repair (per extended warranty for '04-06 model years). Can they scan the ECM to diagnose the performance of the sensor w/o the code and find out if it's on its way out? What should I do?

Your inputs are appreciated.

Bump...

Code P0130 appeared again yesterday but this time I was driving on the freeway, with the engine at normal operating temperature. After 3-4 start cycles, the code disappeared by itself. Gas mileage has not been affected and no performance drop that I can notice.

Any ideas???

I am having the same code so I changed the pre and post cat sensors. The code came back after two starts and will not go away. I called my local dealer and they stated the p0130 code is a bad sensor. Some codes can be other things but the p0130 is a bad pre-CAT sensor. If you don't put an OEM sensor in the Mini, can this issue continue to pop up.

So the code came back because the replacement oxygen sensors you used were not OEM?

I will wait a while to see if the code sticks.

That is what the dealer is saying and I am asking. Is there a sensor brand that I should be ordering that will work other than the OEM Sensor?

What brand did you use?

According to this thread, it seems that only NTK Oxygen Sensor #25648 (by NGK) works on our cars. According to gknorr and nickbmw, NTK is the original equipment. You can find it at RockAuto and I believe Amazon may stock it too.

In my case, I want the code to stick/stay on permanently so I can have the dealer replace it under an extended warranty issued for MYs 2004-2006.

I replaced both of the sensors with the ntk# 25648. They were the same as the what I removed. The p0130 fail code states that the o2 sensor is not detected. I read out the wiring and the ground was not present. I spliced in a ground right off of the connector to the o2 sensor directly to the neg pole of the battery and the code changed to p0031 for o2 sensor heat circuit low. It is not failing for the p0130 when this is done. Both the p0031 and the p0130 call out bank one sensor one. Once I got this, I put everything back to original configuration. I checked the wiring to the ECU and it is good. I am now failing again for the p0130. Could the ECU be bad and cause this code because it is not supplying the ground required to power the o2 sensor?

Sorry I took so long to post again. I am stationed in virginia and the car has been in jacksonville for the past several months. I drove it up here to try and fix it prior to giving to my little girl when she gets her lic. next month.

If anyone can provide some assistance, that would be great.

I was getting this code, after looking around I noticed the wires from my sensor leaning on the heatshield and after bending heatshield a bit to avoid contact the code disappeared. Not sure if this will help but cleared up mine.

I will look it over again. I will swap the o2 sensors and see that fixes it.

My 05 convertible is giving me this, P0130 now. It goes away. Is it one of the Mini recall items? Basically I'm ignoring it. But, I will try to look at the heatshield for that seems to account for some of the randomness. My car is stored for extended periods, all summer and in during Christmas break and it happens everytime I start it after extended periods of inactivity.

P0130 is a general Lean code. Your Mini dealer might be able to track down the cause. P0134 and P0136 are more specific and some dealers will not replace the oxygen sensor(s) without them.
