Hey folks,
Here’s my update. I’m figuring out how to do this on the cheap relatively speaking. Full price at the dealer for this conversion would be $1350. That includes $950 for the retrofit kit # 65 71 0 029 494 ($1180 for parts individually), $420 for labor at shop rate $120 for 3.5 hours). Below is the parts list for the retrofit kit and the price for each from Classic Mini in Ohio.

1.Sensor plate 35 31 6 765 622 .23I have a salvaged two spoke MFSW. (I’ve seen them in the marketplace but mine came with my car when I purchased it used.). Therefore I will not need #2, 10, 11, 12 and 13.
I will be able to use the airbag from my existing non-MFSW. That puts me around $300 for the needed parts minus a 20% NAM discount (I guess I better join) so call it approximately $237 plus labor. As to labor I have a talented independent that works on many brands in my very small town (population 1500) that currently has a copy of the instructions (http://www.motoringfile.com/howto/MFSW.PDF) and isn’t afraid. The good news…..$40 an hour!

Perhaps I’ll be able to get this done for under $500 plus the MFSW.

One of the problems I’m having is reconciling the parts list from the instructions (below) and the parts list from the kit (above). The two lists don’t use the same names! Can someone here help with that? I’m particularly unclear on what #2, #3 and #5 on the instruction parts list are in the parts number list.

Parts list from instructions;
1. steering wheel harness,
2. additional K bus cable
3. 40 pin black plug
4. Torx screw for plastic
5. Clutch switch
6. Front left button block with connection cable
7. Steering wheel connection cable
8. Slip ring with air bag cable
9. Front right button block
10. Rear left button block
11. MFSW (32 33 6 770 428)
12. Rear right button block

Mark

mini cruise control

Some sites say you can buy a retrofit kit, but you need to reset the computer controls and I can't find anyone to do it

amount of time to program

If anyone still reads this, I want to add that you should find an honest place that will program it. I took it to a BMW tuning place, honest as can be, only took them 10 minutes to program the car. after talking, test drive and everything I was in and out is 25 minutes. 2 hours is waaayyyy to long for this simple coding.

Can anyone update on what I need to do for my 06 Automatic Mini with 3 spoke sport wheel to get cruise? I live in Ohio and I have called all the dealerships. None around me have any clue. I called Morristown mini in NJ and they would do it but they quoted $399 in parts and 5 hours of labor at $110-120 per hour... seemed pretty high to me.

Any alternatives?

What I had done was go to a local junk yard and ask for the wiring harness out of a Mini which was the same year but had cruise control. That cost me about $200, It was a cluster mess of wired and took me about 3 days to sort out what wires and plugs I needed. I them purchased the seating wheel from a junk yard $75 and wired that up. and I then had it programmed at a local shop. they charged me $25 or so to do that. The instruction are posted on here at the beginning of the thread I believe. The instructions are very detailed and pay close attention to wire color. it look me about 3-4 hours to install everything, but I had a lot of experience of taking the inferior apart. there are a few plugs you will need off of the wiring harness so be carful to put the right wires back in the right spot when switching out the plugs. If you have any questions let me know

Would it not be possible to just get a wheel and clockspring from a wrecker and install that ?

adding cruise control

I know I'm late to the party, but I'm just now looking into this for my 2005. What did you find out and end up doing?

Obviously i do not have cruise control on my car or multi-function wheel. I do A LOT of highway driving and get quite worried about going to fast. There is HEAVY police traffic on the roads i travel; both local and state and i know i'm bound to get caught eventually. I would feel much safer if i had cruise. I used to use it constantly on my previous car.

Can somebody PM me specifically how to do this. I'm not very tech savy, so details are important. Thanks!

(I should mention my car is a 2003 MINI Cooper S; production is 10/02 if that matters)

I don't know what they charge for parts, but the official Multi Function Wheel retrofit instructions suggest 3.5 hours labour. I'll email them to you (a PDF file), if you like.

Is it possible for you to email a copy to me also? I am interested in getting cruise control for my 2005 R50 manual transmission with 3 spoke steering wheel.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I doubt you'll get a response. The pdf he had is probably this one though. As I understand it, the facelift cars differ slightly from those instructions, but I've never done that installation myself.

I think this has been over complicated somewhere somehow... all you need is a steering wheel with the cruise buttons and install it.. inpa can recode for you or a dealer IF you get an airbag light..

Is that for pre or post facelift cars? Or both?
