Anyone use BMWhat with an R53?

Has anyone used the BMWhat app to read codes on an R53?

I read that Bluetooth OBDII dongles don't work with the early Minis, but saw somewhere that it should work with the wired dongle.

I couldn't find any definite confirmation that BMWhat will work with an R53; and I'd like to know if it works before I spent $50 on the app.

Does anyone have any any experience with this?

I tried to check compatibility with the Lite version with a friend's bluetooth OBDII dongle, but that didn't work.

If it is to work at all, it definitely requires an ODBII to micro usb cable - which I don't have yet.

Seems like it won't work on anything older than 2007

Yeah, I saw that too. But I also read somewhere that it will work as long as you connect via cable, and not wifi or bluetooth.

I'm still hoping to get confirmation from someone who has tried it.

Yea, I tried with my wifi connector didn't work, the app says some cars will connect, some don't. Hopefully someone with a wired can try it out because I'd like to use the app also.

Dont know anything about that app but there are cheaper solutions.

Torque app for android works well and they have a free version. It works with a number of inexpensive bluetooth adapters.

Iphone is different. You need a wifi adapter. Its an Apple thing. They don't let BT adapters to talk to ios.

I could not get Torque to connect to my R53 with a supposedly compatible bluetooth adaptor. Also, as I understand it, Torque will not read or reset the many BMW specific computers in the car - like the airbag warning light system (which I'd like to reset).

I think the bmwhat has more capabilities, coding even? I use dash command for diagnostics and gauges. Works great but you can't clear air bag codes or code with it.
