MINI vs raccoon

Was on freeway, heading to Chicago, and about 15 minutes from downtown, far left lane. Impact at about 70.
Very loud, and didn't think anything of it, until when I got on off ramp. Heard scraping and temp gauge shot up with warning light. Shut car off. Assets damage, broken radiator, condenser and crumpled up plastic underneath. I'm sure there's more...but, because of the over two liter of (known) leaked coolant, it's not drivable.

Wow man that sucks. That's prob my biggest fear, hitting something. Last few nights coming home I've seen deer on the side of the road late at night and I've been freaking out that they will jump onto the road.

Ya, I hit a large jackrabbit on the interstate returning from San Diego a while back. I was amazed at the amount of damage it did..

I hit a rather large piece of roadkill last year that caused $5500 worth of damage. I was also amazed at the amount of damage it caused. Was without the car for about 2 weeks.

Steering stuff is also susceptible to high impact low mass road kill.

Initially, I thought, "I can fix this", but I know there will be a lot of damage. The PS fan probably got damaged or moved as well, and the radiator was millimeters away from touching the serpentine belt.
Insurance company should be calling me back tomorrow. Normally, I rent cars for work trips, since this puts me personally "out", considering its for work. I'm very lucky that this is my first animal impact in many years and miles of driving.

I hit a "Road Gator" in early September on the interstate. $4800.00 + in damage. These cars do not tolerate running over anything.

Ya, did the same thing when i had my R50. It took out all of the grill/lower lip/bumper, dented in the hood and smashed a headlight. It even whipped around and dented the passenger door. repair costs were about the same as your experience.

I hit a turkey and luckily it was a glancing blow. It flushed up out of a culvert on the side of the road and I was traveling about 55. I stayed in my lane and thankfully the turkey banked hard right and it hit my right front a-pillar. It tore off the plastic and foam, damaged some of the moulding top and bottom, and cracked the side view mirror. Miraculously the windshield survived.

The worst part was cleanup.

Did the same thing at 50mph and had to replace the front bumper and a fog light. I know how it sucks being without your car. Didn't do a whole lot of good for the raccoon either.

Ran over a big fox in my Saturn Ion Redline about 8 years ago. Car was still drivable but tore out all the plastic in the front, split the under bumper, condenser, etc. In the $5 to $6K range. Was without the car for over a couple of weeks. Sucks! Best part is you are fine and did not get hurt. Car is repairable.

A couple of years ago, at VIR, a groundhog commited suicide by stepping out in front of me at Turn 7 just before the climbing esses. Since I was doing about 100 mph at the time, no way was I going to take evasive action. Smashed my splitter, lower spoiler under the grille, cracked the entire radiator support and, much to my dismay, caused the right-hand radiator tank seam to leak. Even with me doing all the labor, it was about a $1K hit but I used it as an excuse to get a Mishimoto Aluminum radiator.

I should have recommended to the shop to pick up an aluminum radiator-may have been cheaper than an OEM MINI one!!!
Should have my car back by early next week. Don't know the exact total for damage, probably under $2k. Since I drove for work, I may get the deductible refunded!!!

Coyote

One year ago this past January, on a warm January night in North Carolina that was very foggy, what I thought was a large dog ran in front of me and I could not help but hit it. $1200 worth of damage was done to my bumper and also had to have the foglamps replaced. Checking on the animal, it was a large coyote!

As I learned painfully last year, the damage from hitting a small animal is nothing compared to the potential damage/injury from trying to avoid it. On a country road with ditches on both sides, late at night after driving on highways for 10 hours, a raccoon appeared directly ahead and I impulsively swerved to miss it. Couldn't straighten out and went off the road, rolled over at least once, landing on the driver's side. Totaled MCS ('08) and a fractured scapula that took weeks to heal fully, but thankfully that was all. I would call it an expensive lesson, but the insurance payment was about double what I had hoped to get for the car!

I got hit by a early morning 420 friendly '70s era pickup a while back... He pulled a left hand turn and ran into me as I was standing on my brakes to try to stop... just hit that metal front bumper hard enough to crease my hood, trash a light, and ding up the bumper.

Granted it was early morning, in the dark and it was drizzling and everyone had lights on, and he said he just didn't see me... I wondered how he could see anything the way he was squinting.

I only included this because I felt as if this guy was road kill about to happen.

Here are a few pics...

...this was $6K to fix...

Motor on!
