R50/53 Why is the S Red?

What I was getting at was that Minis are a "british" car and traditionally the sporting/racing color of britain is green (brg). While red is the color of italian racing, silver german and blue french. Thanks to dan gurney the american colors are white with blue racing stripes. but shouldn't the cars use their respective country colors to represent sportiness?
