A lot of other cars that are deemes "s" models have the s in red...
that I have noticed, The Acura CL - S, and the Carolla S....they both have the model in chrome, and the S in red. I think it just goes along with the whole sporty theme.
Red is a primary color and it one that we (humans) see very well. Since it stands out against every other color it draws more attention...like a sports car (often done in red)...like the MCS (Mine is CR to really stand out!
Are you sure it is really an S. Look closer. It looks like a stylized curved piece of Hi-Way. It may have been penned before the model name was even chosen. Is it really an S? Think not.

Though red is a primary color, it is the visible color that is MOST difficult to perceive by the human eye. It is on the low end of the visible spectrum of light (what, about 440nm IIRC).
Personally, I think the "S" is red to mess with the red-green color blind among us, most common in men. Not that I am in that fold, but still... Any thoughts on this, conspiracy buffs?
