50k Club: Out of warrantee and OK by me

My '02 MCS is sitting in its garage with 50,002 miles. Won't hit its second birthday for another couple of weeks. Sure has been a great two years of motoring!

Haven't had many repairs. Just the minor rattles and stuff. Heck, I'm still on my first windsheild.

So now... when I get a minor sqeak, or a warning light pops on, it'll have to be fixed on my dime. I might not be so quick to have it repaired. I might go to greater lengths to fix it myself. I may turn to my local German car garage to do the work instead of BMW.

I plan on keeping this car for a long, long time. I expect other NAM members will do the same. I wonder if some members will move from sharing mod tips to more repair tips.

Bottom line is... I love this car and look forward to many more years of motoring. When the car needs a bit of work, I know other NAM members will be there with ideas, opinions and expertise.

Godspeed.

Congrats on you +50K of happy motoring! You're right, someday we may all sound more like classic Mini owners....trading parts, recommending mechanics, and pursuing even crazier mods as the aftermarket catches up. Frankly, based on some of what I've seen so far, the expertise here is pretty freakin' incredible.

I'm at 50,300+ miles of motoring and he won't hit his 2nd B-Day until October!

I will do a 50k mile write-up soon. I have several performance mods to write about and have had a bunch of stuff go south when at first it looked like my MINI was a perfectly built one. But yet with that said...

I'm out of warranty and I'm still loving every minute of it!

I'm so glad!

I was looking at my odometer yesterday, I'm at 19300 and haven't hit my first birthday. That's in about three weeks. So now I've read your posts - cooperbeagle and greatgro - I don't feel bad at all. The only thing I regret is that most of those miles are going to work miles and not just having fun miles. Got to get out there to some mini meets!

Thanks guys for putting it all in perspective.

20K miles seems about the average for first year ownership. I'm at 22,000 miles, and -75 miles for Service #2, and also about 3 weeks away from the first birthday!

Congrats on hitting the 50K milestone CooperBeagle and Greatgro!

Peanut had 22K miles on her first anniversary; now she's got just under 30K. She'll prolly hit 50K right around her second anniversary in March. (I count birthday as build date, which in her case is late January; anniversary is delivery date, which is mid-March). I also plan on keeping her well into the vintage years so she gets lots of attention and care. So far so good...

Congrats to you folks with 50k miles. If and when you take your car in for the next servicing please share with us what it'll cost. We don't want to be surprised with maintenance bill shock.

MINI dealer service hourly rates are approaching astronomical figures.

I'm At 48,000 or so m'self, and crossing my fingers somewhat after the 50k. I've almost always bought an extended warranty with new cars, knowing we can put a lot of miles on our vehicles, so the major and a lotta the minor bits are good for another 50,000 miles. The extensions have saved my pocketbook more than a coupla times, and the one time I didn't get one - yup, burned me. Hoping for the next 50k to be as smooth, touch wood.

Doing well, and yourself? It was nice seeing you that trip to Seattle - been there twice now in Brooksie, so yeah, those miles add up! ;-) I do love those roads in Oregon - fun twisties! Next time I'm up your way, Lunch'll be on me this time, I'll give you a heads up! I have been a Drivin' Fool at times!

It's great to hear how you are doing at about 50K miles.

Good thing I am prisoner on an island. Only 15,000 miles in 18 months.

Out of warranty? Go for it. Mod away.

No Worries

As of today I'm at 45800+ at just over a year and a half with hardly any problems to date. Coolant tank and boot latch are the only items that have been fixed under the warranty. I'm driving it more now than I was, so I should be at the 50000 mark in a couple of weeks. The only thing I need to figure out is how to reset the service indicator when I do the next oil change.
As for being out of warranty, I'm not worried at all, my last two cars had over 220,000 miles on them and still were running strong when I sold them. And to date the MINI has been more reliable than either of them were (honda and a toyota)

56K miles and still going strong, 18 months old , 8 track days this year so far with 3 more scheduled. "THDUKE" has been to Limerock, Watkins Glen, Pocono North, South, and long course, and VIR. Will be at Summit Point in September. First 18K miles unmodded with no problems, JCW Brembo big brake kit @ 18K miles, Miltek header @ 45K miles, relpaced water pump seal , and had a recurring DSC problem repaired under warranty, a couple of wind shields also under warranty and the boot latch.

Good news is I have extended warranty to 100K for those expensive repairs like dsc control module and gear box issues

28 months & 67.5K miles. No track days yet, autocross almost every weekend, 3 autocross driving schools, 4th planned. Had some real problems, but would not do it any other way.

45k on an 02 and such a tough call

My car is worth next to nothing in trade in, and having seen over 40 days in warrantee shop for the last year, i have very little hope for it in the future. Feeling completely screwed and not the least bit optimistic. Glad to hear someone felt better.

two years this september.

Just checking...this is an aftermarket extended warranty, right? 'cause so far as I've been able to tell, and as has been discussed here on NAM, there's currently no BMW/MINI extension to the 50K warranty.

Do you mind sharing what the extension cost, and what company provides it? I'd guess that many here on NAM would be interested (eventually) in knowing about an extended warranty that covers cars that have been modded such as yours!

^ For sure! At that price, you could virtually buy a new car...or at least a continuing supply of new parts for your existing one.

I got my coverage from AWB "AUTOWarranty" https://www.autowarrantybroker.com/ I choose the Premier Plus plan with a $25 deductible at a cost of $1575 to extend factory warranty to 4 years and 100K miles, its always cheaper to cover the car while its still under factory warranty, if its out of factory warranty its a lot more expensive.

Here is what my coverage includes:
PowerTrain Covereage -Engine, Transmission, Front and rear wheel drive
PowerTrain Plus Coverage - Air Con, Brakes, Cooling System, Electrical, Front Suspension, Fuel system, Steering
Premier Coverage - High-Tech Package "factory installed Equipment Only"
Premier Plus Coverage_ Coverage for any Breakdown of Vehicle, less deductible, except for items listed under "Events which are not covered" such as scheduled maintenance.
So as you can see I have the same coverage that the factory gives after 36K miles
