R50/53 2003 mini cooper timing cover removal
#2
I don’t think you’re required to put the car into service mode to remove the timing cover. Mine was in service mode for other work so I can’t be a 100% positive.
You need to remove the entire fender liner.
The idler and tensioner pulleys will need to be removed
The crank pulley, but that goes without saying.
If you’re thinking of changing the chain guides you will need to remove the valve cover and the right side engine mount.
There are certain parts that you will need to replace if you’re going in this far.
The crank bolt (One time use)
Timing cover gasket
The oil pump gaskets there are two. Don’t even think about skipping these or you could have an oil pressure problem. Make sure they’re in place before stabbing the cover back on.
The crank seal
The two o-rings for the chain guide plugs
The cam sensor o-ring not required but access is pretty easy when you're in there that far.
