There is a video clip from the remake of the Italian Job film at ET online.
http://www.etonline.com/movie/a12440.htm
It starts with Charlize Theron sitting in a CR MCS and then a take with Mark Wahlberg and the MINI does a backwards 180.

In the original movie, which any MINI lover should see, the MINIs were used to rob a gold shipment and carry off the gold.
They loaded the MINIs with weights first to see if they could handle the weight and to learn to drive them when loaded down. They do some amazing driving stunts with the old MINIs in the original movie.

Just for some clarification here. I heard that there are 2 versions of the Italian Job out on VHS? One made in the 70's and one made in the 90's. Can anyone confirm this? I called a couple video stores to see if they have the movie, and they asked which copy I wanted from the years I posted above. I'd like to watch the movie before I order it. No video outlets have it. But they can order it in. So I'd like to know how many versions there is. Thanx.

From the Internet Movie Database, there are only 2 versions, and one of them isn't out yet
here is the 1969 version, and here is the '2003' version...
maybe it was released on VHS twice, like as in a 'special' edition verison...

There is a badly cut-down (butchered) version of The Italian Job out on VHS which comes in at about 90 minutes but renders the plot pretty incomprehensible. The subplot about English football fans, who touch off the traffic jam that shuts down the city and permits the MINI crew to rob the gold truck, is entirely chopped out. I suspect this is the American TV edit -- it used to play on US network television a lot in a two-hour time slot, interrupted by commercials, and maybe the network thought US audiences wouldn't understand anything about English footballers.
It's painful to watch although the MINI stunt driving is pretty intact. So if you get the movie look for the original/restored version. I assume the DVD will be faithful to the original.

The DVD has (in the version already released in the UK) the entire movie, plus some bonus features including a "making of" documentary and a deleted scene involving Minis "dancing" on ice.
According to all the reviews I've seen of it.
I've been seriously trying to find a US DVD version of it for some time now.

>>Is there someone here on this forum/site from the UK that might be able to hook us up with some if we get a group-buy happening. Either that or someone here knowing of someone out there in the UK?

USA DVD and VHS players cannot play Euro DVDs or VHS tapes. Vice versa too. Different encoding or something like that. Really stinks. I've often wanted to purchase concert DVDs/VHS tapes of Euro bands, but am limited by this.
I suppose you could upload the DVD to an .mpeg or something, then send it to us, and reburn to DVD. But geeze, that'd be a LONG download....even with cable/dsl. Oh well....

Well, I know there's a region lock out on DVD's (hint, buy a Sampo, it's really easy to turn of the region lock-out on them, and I for one, HIGHLY question the ethics of region lock-outs in the first place... ESP. w/video games...) but I think it's the dvd player itself that outputs the PAL signal, unlike VHS where the VHS tape contains either a PAL or NTCS signal... I could be wrong, but I know there are some DVD players that are PAL/NTSC selectable, which leads me to this line of thinking...

Just went out and rented this movie. Starts off kinda slow, but once the plan goes into works and they bust out the classic Mini's, it's a riot. They must have had a ball doing those scenes. Wonder how many Mini they went through? Had to go out for a little rip around in my MCS after that. Couldn't help it.
I'd still like to purchase a dvd version if it ever comes available to North America. Any luck tracking down info on that yet? Think maybe I'll just order the vhs version to cure me for now.
Thumbs up.
Cheers,

i don't know, i got a vhs from amazon.com that had the entire film, even the part with the footballers... they sent me an email about the dvd too, (which i had pre-ordered, but later changed my mind...for now). i was going to check the site, but i can't get on amazon.com now.. perhaps later... great film though, shame that it's going to be ruined by hollywood.
it's called the ITALIAN job!!!! how can it be ITALIAN if it's set in LA?????

I thought I read somewhere else on here that the Mini's they used for the remake here in LA were converted to electric because of the extensive indoor filming (fumes are bad). Wonder what kind of range they were getting?
Anyhow never saw the original version as of yet. I will need to make a run out to Blockbuster I guess.
Motor On.

As far as DVDs are concerned, as long as you've switched your DVD player to be multi-region, or can switch it from region to region at will (multi-regioning a DVD player is the first thing you should do with it, region coding is an evil scam put on there by the money grabbing movie studios), a region 2 DVD will play on an NTSC setup no problem. The regions aren't defined as PAL, NTSC etc. they're done purely by region number, and it's only so that the studios can charge more for DVDs in each region, or get away with releasing a 'no frills' cheapo version of a DVD at full price in one region, while releasing a 'full features' one in another.
All you need to find is a retailer that imports region 2 DVDs (not many do, because region 2 is an excuse for the studios to charge 40% more for the DVDs in Europe, so importing them to the States would make them even more of a rip off).
