No "Trifecta", but still a relentless TPMS light - have error codes

Small Edit: See post #2 for a list of different BMW fault codes for ABS systems. Does anyone know which system an early R50 has?

Hi guys and gals. This is a topic that seems to be pretty well covered and I assure you I have done a bunch of searching through threads trying to find my answer to no avail.

I recently acquired my R50 and it came with the tire pressure light lit up. I have gone through the reset procedure many times and it does nothing. I do know that the switch has power as it is illuminated when the lights are turned on. I have also ensured that I have correct tire pressures.

I bought the Creator C310 OBDII scanner tool (I have an airbag light on as well) and pulled the codes. The result I got are codes 5E19 CAN data fault from DME/DDE (DSC lamp on as long as error is present) and 5E5C Initialize run flat indicator (see owner's handbook).

I don't believe my car has DSC, so I don't get a DSC lamp. I have searched a ton for info on the 5E19 code and most of the time it seems to be related to a faulty ABS sensor -- which would make sense with the tire pressure light. I am a bit confused though as people with the same code say that it can point towards a faulty steering angle sensor, which my car shouldn't have since it does not have DSC.

However, I would expect the ABS light to be lit if that were the case -- and I think every thread I've read where someone had a faulty ABS sensor, they also had the "trifecta" of DSC/Tire pressure/ABS lights. When I turn my key, the ABS light does come on with all of the other dash lights, so I know that it is working.

Can anyone make any sense of this? In the morning, I will see if I can find the ABS module under the hood and test resistance across the connectors to see if I can find one of the sensors that is out of spec.

Questions I have:
  • Have you seen something like this before?
  • Does anyone have the correct resistance values for the ABS sensors handy? I need to get myself a Bentley manual still.
  • Does anyone have a good source for a list of codes and their meanings? The only lists I have seen have all of the codes starting with a P or a Q -- I think those are the true OBDII codes (tire pressure not being a required OBD system). In a thread I read that the numbers in my codes may have meanings (like the 5 and 19 in 5E19 may tell me what sensor might be bad). I haven't found solid info on this. Is this listed in the Bentley manual?
Lastly, I have an unrelated question that I don't think needs another thread: I pulled my airbag code and got 05 Side Airbag, Front Left.

Would the side airbag be the one in the seat? I have read that the connectors under the seat are a weak point, so I will take a look at those. And I just want to confirm... left side is the Driver's side, correct? There is conflicting information on that on the internet (surprise!).

If you've read this far, thank you. And thanks for any help you can provide.

Searching for BMW ABS Code Meanings. I don't know which system my car has, but they all seem to have something in common...the number 5 seems to point towards the right rear wheel speed sensor (5).

I am still curious what the E and 19 might mean. At this point I just need to check the sensors, but it kind of bothers me not knowing exactly what the code(s) mean.

Did you ever fix the tire warning light? I have a 2003 without DSC and you appear to have the close to the same problem I have. Originally had Brake, ABS, low tire lights along with service engine and airbag when bought the car but now down tire warning. Original had no connection to ABS and replaced the controller/hydraulic unit which allowed me to find bad speed sensor. With new sensor brake and ABS cleared but low tire stayed lit and reset does nothing using button or diagnostic software. ABS provides 5E14 and 5E15 on MK60 module. When monitoring wheel speed sensors while driving they appear to report the same speed. Running INPA to trouble shoot. FYI My airbag left side was due to broken wire under seat and drivers side from bad clock spring (no horn isolated it) engine is longer story ending in cam shaft replacement.
Follow up: Reprogrammed the ABS module with NCSExpert, apparently used module from Ebay was programmed for DSC, Cleared tire warning light and 5E14/15 faults.
