'06 R53 idling/running rough

Hey everyone,

Yesterday afternoon my '06 R53 starting running really rough. There was also a loss of power. At first I thought someone stole my catalytic converter, but I had been driving all morning without any problems. It wasn't until I was leaving the library that I noticed that it was running really rough on the freeway. This is happening even while idling. It is really loud like I'm missing a muffler or something.

I have no idea what is going on and I know I need to take it to my mechanic--he specializes in MINIs and BMWs. I don't want to take it to a dealer because of the high cost. But I am wondering what the problem is.

Thoughts? Thank you.

Check the basics:
1. Check air filter - remove, making sure to clean any dirt piles/bug parts it collected and see if car runs better w/o it.
2. Remove, inspect replace spark plugs. Google inspection of spark plugs to see if there are any issues with engine. BUT replace plugs with new.
3. Get a pressure gauge you can use to see if there is fuel pressure at the injectors. Check at the Schrader port on the fuel rail

Thanks Bruce,

I will definitely check those things. It's been pretty cold here the last week (for the SF Bay Area) and it feels like the cylinders are misfiring or something.

I've also scheduled an appointment an indy MINI repair shop near me. This problem is beyond my ability to fix.

Thanks again,

Rich
