Fuel gauge calibration

So when I first got my mini on the road after a lengthy list of repairs, the fuel gauge was reading about 1/3 and I stopped to fill up. It took 50 litres to fill it... From 1/3... 50 litres is the nominal capacity for the tank... So half is the new empty for me right now. It would be nice to have a reliable read on my fuel level though.

I haven't started taking things apart yet, but I'm going to have to soon as when I completely fill the tank I tend to leave a small puddle behind. Might as well deal with all the issues at once. Any thoughts? In photos I've seen, both the pump and filter/sending unit have a float gauge on them? If only one side had a float I might have a better idea where to start. Thoughts? Anyone else gone deep into the fuel system?

If the passenger side (US) is not siphoning and equalizing both sides you can show fuel when you are empty. Mine shows 1/4 when I’m empty. I haven’t changed out the pass side unit yet.
