Mini is down for the count
hey guys,
My 06 has been down for the count for the past 9 months.months taken it to the shop for an oil change and 2 miles later as I was pulling into my street, heard a sort of clattering almost chain like noice...no warning light. No temp change, no funny smells...and the car stalled...I literally coasted the rest of the 100 ft to the house and pulled it into the garage. There she sat all this time... figuring out what to do now...could it have been a timing chain tensioner?? If so. Did I do catastrophic engine damage? It wouldn't even turn over after that, just click click when I hit the ignition.
Car is mint condition w 165k miles I really enjoy it, but I don't think I want to drop in a new engine... prior to this the car had been bullet proof with the exception of having to change oil filter housing assembly (with built in cooler) since it started making a weird chain noise...and oil light would come one...replaced that part and then less than a year it failed again got another under warranty and then few months later this issue described above.
thoughts? I was thinking of selling also..as I'm scared of it becoming a rabbit hole $$$...

Waiting was not a good idea, if they mangled something while changing ht oil (or failed to put any back in) you would have had some recourse, Nine months later all bets are off. Did you check the oil after it stopped? Have you looked at the front of the engine to see if the drive belt is intact? You're not giving anyone much to go on.

Unless you've done other internal engine modifications you shouldn't have any valve to piston contact. Could the timing chain guide or tensioner failed, absolutely. If you pop the rocker cover off, you can look at the chain and see if there is any tension in it before you get to digging too deep. If the guides broke, you won't see that without removing them or pulling the oil pan and fishing out the parts.
