Necessary to lubricate axle seals before driving them in?
Hi all,
i noticed my driver side axle seal is leaking and I have a replacement. I have a scrap transmission i used to test driving the seal with some pvc parts I bought at Home Depot, and it went in fine, but is it smart to add a slight amount of gear oil to avoid anything tearing when driving in? The mating surface of the seal is rubber and has small ridges. I’m not sure if driving it in dry could tear them up and affect its tolerance. Thanks!
Also, I read in the Bentley manual that the metal ring on the axle shaft that seats in the transmission should be replaced If the axle is removed and reinstalled. Do you guys find this to be truly necessary? The axles only have about 5k on them.
