R50 Power Steering Delayed at startup
Here's a new one for me:
2004 R50 97k No power steering on startup, needs about 30-60 seconds before power steering returns, then functions normally until next shutoff. No codes, no lights. Power steering reservoir is full, and I've moved the wheels lock-to-lock several times to purge air from the system.
Not likely related: I recently replaced the alternator, which had failed and symptoms were alternator light and no power steering at startup. Alternator replaced with new (not reman). Currently (ha!) The battery at rest is 12.68v, dips only to 11.5 during starter crank, then system voltage of 13.87 while running, so it appears the battery and new alternator are is still working fine.
Has anyone had a similar experience? The power steering pump/fan has been replaced under dealer warranty years ago.
Thanks.
Apologies for the two posts- wrong forum earlier.

You first problem makes sense, the PS pump controller gets a signal from the alternator and will not engage unless it's producing enough voltage.
I would check this signal on start-up, perhaps there's a wiring issue between the two (it's the middle wire on the small connector on the pump).

at our shop I was working at, there are some cars and some alternators that will not start charging until after running for about 30 seconds to a minute....and we found out this was normal.....I don't know if this pertains to our cars or not.....I would put a voltmeter connected to the battery and have the meter in my hand while starting the car to see if there is a "delayed" charging or not
Other than that, I don't have any other ideas

Thanks- yes I did that and voltage jumped from a cranking voltage of 11.xx immediately up to the appropriate charging voltage of 13.87.
