Reading error codes

Is there a way to read the error codes without an OBD reader.

If you are somewhat computer savvy, I would buy a cable to hook up to a laptop. I would then install ISTA, which is the software BMW/MINI uses to get into your cars computers (OBD & other). It can be a pain to find a copy and possibly install, but once you do it reads the codes and performs diagnostics as well as presents a service plan.
