Overheats in 2 mins and AC not working

2006 r50

Gents the car starts and over heats in 2 mins from start. The temp gauge goes to full. We also noticed the AC not working.

I thought maybe the belt broke, but no. Turning and on track.

Coolant appears full, but upper hose is cold.

Thermostat, right?

We recently installed a new thermostat, OE but not genuine BMW

Looking for ideas to help get this car back in service. All ideas appreciated

That's a very short amount of time for the engine to go from stone cold to overheating, even if the thermostat was bad. Are you sure the engine is actually overheating and it's not a faulty gauge/sensor?

If it is actually overheating than I would suspect a blown head gasket.

Get that sorted before worrying about the AC.

It's easy to install the thermostat backwards (it will fit that way). Are you sure the spring side of the thermostat is inserted in the engine block?

Good points. I'll plug in inpa and see if I get a different reading. And I'll time it again. It was very quick.

Good thought. I'm sure. It has been operating normally for about a year now. No overheating issues. We installed the thermostat last summer.

Ok mrbean, good call.

seems it is a sensor issue, or sensor circuit issue. At 2 mins the gauge spikes. From cold to full as well as the reading in inpa. It throws code 280.

however the read out returns to normal in inpa shortly after. The gauge stays at full. First set of pics. High fan on.

I let it run and it came up to temp as normal. High fan on.

after restarting the engine. The gauge and inpa read normal. High fan off

and the AC works. I think I read in the Bentley that the AC clutch is opened under several conditions, maybe overheating being one. I’ll try and see if I can find it

pics to follow

When I got my R53 2 weeks ago, I was having issues with the temp gauge going to full scale like that. It was resolved when I eliminated the X15 connector, and soldered all the wires direct to each other (my connector was in real bad shape)

Might want to double check and make sure you dont have corrosion down there!

connector was toast. The clip broke off while I was removing the sensor

ALLMAG appears to have a used one in stock (I bought a used crank position sensor connector from them that worked well). Some eBay listings also came up.

I’ll have to search for a how-to on YouTube. Seems like it might not be that difficult

Go to YouTube and search for depinning electrical connectors. Many useful videos on the topic.
