R50/53 Does your MPG suck?!?!?!

pre-emission software upgrade OBC mpg (70% highway + 30% city) = 30 +/- 2 mpg (error based on a few repeat measurements)
pre-emission software upgrade hand calculated ( same % as above) = 27 +/- 2 mpg (again, error based on a few repeat measurements)
reset OBC for city only driving and driving a couple of miles yields 19-20 mpg
reset OBC for highway only driving for approximately 20 miles yields 40 mpg
Have not hand calculated since the software upgrade.

My MC turns 3100RPM's going 70MPH in 5th.Thats 90% of my driving. I get to that speed shifting at 5500-6000RPM's,usually skipping 4th, as I'm going 70 anyway.
In the city were I work, which accounts for 10% of my driving, where most of the streets I go on have a 40MPH limit. I tend to stay in 2nd gear, turning 4000RPM's. Better throttle responce, and just plain more fun.
I average 600 miles a week.
35-38MPG.Thats U.S. gallons.
Lowest was 24MPG after a few days of backroads fun.

2005 MCS with web spokes, premium, sports packages... on our drive back from Dallas to Phoenix (from the dealer) I got 30-31 on the long freeway stretches.... 5th and 6th gear with cruise set on 75-80 and the A/C on. The last two weeks with the more regular mix of 2/3rds city streets and a 1/3rd freeway it dropped to 26 or 27. This is calculated mileage based on the miles per tank and gallons I put in at the next re-fuel, not the computer, although its been accurate to within a half gallon.
My MA brought up a good point when walking us through the car, to be sure that you reset the two computer calculated averages when you fill up (if you have the onboard computer) so that your current tank of gas gets measured the most accurately, and it averaged in with the previous miles on the previous tank of fuel.

Nebr. Fan
Nebr. fan, living the good life in AZ, I have 9500 on my 05 MCC,with CVT we live out of the city of Tucson so our mimimum drive is 6 miles. Milage always 32 in and around town 34 to 36 Hwy. I have tried 91, 89 and 87 octane, no difference in milage. So why not just use 87. With the CVT trans. you can't use it as a race car just a fun car.

The on-board computer says I'm getting about 20 but when I calculate myself its closer to 18 (whole other discussion there)
My friends are getting closer to 30.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm not a speed demon but I think the issue is related to my average speed which is pretty close to the same number as my MPG - usually around 20.
I live in LA and 90% if not more of my driving is on the city streets in traffic (UGGGGG).
Anyone else have sucky MPG numbers? Any suggestions on how to improve it other than moving out of LA?
(The famous Clover and I were discussing how we have always lived here in LA and thought we always would but are both ready to move because of the traffic (again a whole other discussion))

With my 03 MC 5 speed, when some 87 got pumped in by the gas jockey by mistake, I noticed a drop in both MPG and performance. Now probably the MPG went down cause I had to put my foot into it more to get the car to feel the same.
I filled the tank when it was down a 1/4 tank every couple of days, as more 91 octane was in the mix, things went back to normal.
The price diff. is made up for in MPG, plus the manual, the filler cap, the dealer all say to use 91. I'm not going to screw with the warrenty.

I've only had 2 tanks of gas in my MCSa. I reset the computer when I drove off the dealer lot. Mixed driving, no hard acceleration, smooth braking. And quite a bit of paddle shifting to 5th (when it the engine seems stuck on 4th) during urban driving.
The OBC has been steady at 23 MPG
Oh well... I go on a 1300 mile road trip in July, mostly interstate. We'll see what the OBC says then.

Last time I was in Seoul I remember the gas prices being ridiculous. After doing some math, it came out to be $6 a gallon I think..

I average a little over 25 MPG, mostly on 2-lane, moderately hilly roads. Mind you, though, this is with several stops along the route, in a car equipped with a 19% pulley, and the backside of the throttle pedal is often intimately familiar with the carpet.
The best fuel consumption I have clocked was on the way back from the Dragon in 2004. Steady cruising with the pace of traffic on I-81, in the rain, and with the defroster (and thus, the AC) on, I got 33.6 MPG. Not too shabby!
I also change my oil more frequently than MINI recommends, as I have found that this also seems to improve fuel economy- as it has in my other vehicles. I try to change oil and filter at each 5000 miles, but I have let it go longer since the last fill, as I am curious to see how Red Line does over a longer interval.

400miles/$30.00 450miles/$33.50
WOW! I continue to be impressed by my 1yo '04 MINI Cooper.
Last two tankfull's:
400miles / 11.817gal = 33.8mpg $30.00 (OBC range remaining: 55)
452mile / 12.891gal = 35.1mpg $33.50 (OBC range remaining: 14)
most astonishing... that last tank included 1/2 hour on Summit Point
Shannandoah course!

My 04 MCS used to get about 26 MPG (US) with 93 octane with mixed driving. two months ago I completed an upgrade on the car with a stage 2 from MINIMANIA, smaller supercharger pulley (15%), new shark computer program, Borla exhaust, K&N filter and plugs. Now I get just over 28MPG with MUCH more power. Not what I expected but i'm way chuffed about it. Has anyone else had this kind of experience? BTW I hand calculate MPG every tank full as the computer is bloody useless.

.....mileage, what the heck is mileage......?
I currently run my MCS (late 2003) at 26-29 mpg. Citydriving will get me down to around 23 mpg, pedal to the metal of course produces even lower figures.
The "on board computer" in my NAV shows figures which differ up to 13 % from the actual mileage.
But then again, if you want really good mileage, don't buy a MINI but rather a pair of new sneakers.......

I have an 05 MCS/JCW, and I usually get 25-26 actual with the OBC telling me 27-28. I reset my OBC at each fillup. My OBC avg speed is usually in the 30-35 range.
I don't hold up traffic unless the V1 is screaming. I drive mainly on 2 lane roads in the rural north Georgia mountains. My daily commute takes me into downtown Chattanooga every day, but thankfully the parts of town I'm in aren't gridlocked.
When I'm not in a hurry or wanting to play, I shift at 2200-2400 rpm. I NEVER let it get over 2500 until it is fully warmed up. When I'm playing with it, I use 1/2 - 2/3 throttle and shift at 5000-5500 rpm. A few times a month, I run to redline and/or use full throttle. I always have the climate control in "AUTO". The windows fog up without the compressor running. To be honest, I really can't tell a performance difference whether the compressor is running or not. I know a lot of folks complain that the a/c really slows the car down, but I just don't see it.
I came out of a '94 Impala SS that got 16-18 mpg, so I'm not disappointed at all in the MINI's fuel consumption. Although I did get 25 mpg ONCE when I drove to Orlando at exactly the speed limit (it was week of July 4th and this is money-grubbing Georgia)
To address the earlier question of how someone said 2 HP/cubic inch...
1.6 litres = ~97 cubic inches
210 HP / 97 cubic inches = 2.165 HP/in^3 so 2 hp/in^3 is a close enough estimate.
