Clutch Warranty Issues

I have about 45,000 miles on my '04 MCS. This means I am out of my 36,000 maintenance period, but within my 50,000 warranty.

My clutch might be slipping, which is the subject of another note. I called my dealer to make an appointment to get it looked at, and possibly replaced. The response I got was interesting.

It seems that if the clutch goes when the car has less than 30,000 miles, the warranty does not apply because they believe a clutch can only go out that quickly due to owner abuse.

If the clutch goes out when the car has more than 36,000 miles, like mine does, then the warranty does not apply because the clutch is an ordinary wear and tear item, like brakes or tires.

Only if the clutch goes when the car has more than 30,000 but less than 36,000 miles does the warranty apply.

Has anyone else had any experience getting their clutch replaced under warranty? I understand the dealer's reasoning, and will pay to have the work done if necessary, but if there is a free option out there, I'd prefer to take it. The dealer told me this is about a $1400 job.

0-30,000 miles - Owner abuse

30-36,000 miles - Replace as maintenance item

36,001 to end of warranty - Ordinary wear item.

OK, my dealer said it was worth the extra money to buy the extended maintenaince because the clutch WOULD go before 50K. So that fits with what you said.

And that extended warranty will include wear items?

Interesting.

Assuming it does, just how late can one purchase the extended warranty?

I've been driving sticks for about 30 years, and never had a clutch go out with less than 100,000 miles.

I still have never understood anyone thinking that a clutch worn out should be covered by waranty.

If it is slipping more than likely it is worn to the point that it's not doing its job.
The only way to see if it is a part DEFECT is to accept the fact that you more than likely will be paying for it.
This, sorry to say can not be checked unless torn down, but if a defect is found then it should be covered.
As far as i've read on this fourm most who have had clutch problems own MCSs. Just an observation.
Flame away if you want but almost all clutch problems are driver related.
Cheers
Shawn

nolimit,

Please read the last paragraph of my original note again, and tell me if your response was directed to me, or to someone else.

My extended warranty is the same as the factory one, wear items are not covered.

I had to get my tranny replaced about 8 months ago, another story

When they pulled the old tranny, it had about 38K miles on it, the tech said my tranny looked like new:smile:

Not towards you, but to a lot of those that feel that the warranty should cover thier mistakes.
