How long did your original brakes last?

Hi, I just came back from Mini dealer and amongs other things they checked my brakes. Pads were at 8mm. I know they replace them at 3mm. I am at 20k miles. I will probably not see a free brake replacement before 36k maintenance runs out.....
I can extende maintenance till 4/50k for $400 - is it worth it?
If I can get a set of rotors/pads I guess it would be.......what do you guys think?
Also, inpection II is at 60k, right?

Thanks!

My OEM pads lasted about 1000 miles, before I replaced them with Hawk ceramics! Extremely little brake dust and at worst as good braking as before, but mostly better with equal or better pad life.

cheers,
phil

I got 70,000 out of the OEM brakes on my first MINI. Just replaced the brake lines, rotors and pads. Went with PowerSlot rotors and Hawk ceramic pads. I really like the new system. Very little brake dust. I have 38,000 on my second MINI so far. The OEM pads and rotors are designed to wear together so you may be replacing the pads and rotors at the same time.

If you want to wear them out it isn't that hard. Just drive like one of the Flying Finns of Rally fame. Gas and brakes both on through the corners. You get good traction and brake pads are done in no time.

I'm very glad to read that there is a pad that cures the black wheels syndrome. Unfortunately mine will last more than a 1000 miles. Just can't bring myself to replace parts that aren't worn out. Same thing goes for the darn runflats.

I had mine replaced under the free maintenance at about 25k. The last 3 thousand or so of those, I was using the brakes harder than usual to wear them out, so I'd get them done before my 3 years were up, but I wasn't left foot braking at all.

You'll be happy (maybe unhappy) to know I'm at 57k+ on the original pads.
Probably 57k+ lbs. of brake dust too!

I put Greenstuff pads on a week after I bought my MC.

Over 2 years and 65K miles later, they're ready to be replaced.

I'm at 1150 miles and once I finally get to the dealer, that's how many miles mine will have lasted.

Oh well. It gives me more time to aggravate my MA.

My front brake pads and rotors lasted almost 40k miles. I had them replaced by my local independent BMW/MINI mechanic.

My rear brakes have been my problem. The right rear went down to metal on metal at abour 24k miles while the left still had about 1/3 pad left. They were replaced under warranty. Recently, the identical situation occurred after another 24k miles and they are now replacing the right caliper and replacing pads and rotors under warranty due to the unusual wear pattern.

I expect that the original rear pads and rotors would have lasted about the same 40k miles had my MINI not had this issue.

(another YuccaPatrol post accidentally posted under his wife's account! :impatient )

Yucca, that was my problem which caused the light to come on during the trip to MOTD 2004. After that I never had a problem with them up until selling the car at 46k miles.

I'm suprised at this set going bad so soon. Squeeking like a mad man and tonight, slowing and turning sharp into a parking space, an awful sound and vibration similiar to a CV joint going bad. I'm thinking something loose in the braking system but after checking when I got home nothing seemed out of place.
