To your point, those ppl are being naive. They dont understand how the market works. There was a FS thread here a few month back where the owner just couldnt understand why he couldnt get close to what he paid (I forget the thread).
In fact, MINI give you everything you really need "stripped". All the basics are there ... everything else is a luxary.

Mine is fully loaded, and was $38500 cdn all in. ($33200US)
If I could do it again I would settle for a bare bones MCS.

Ok, that being said, I added the JCW kit to my base 04 for a total of $26k. Then I picked up a set of barely used JCW brakes for $500. And I'm actively looking around for a deal on the JCW suspension. And when the clutch goes, I'll probably go with a Quaife LSD. So, kids, I'm no role model...

Sorry but I didn't have the patience to read every reply but wanted to add a few things...
Buying Used? A great idea for any car except a Mini, IMOH. If you spend any time here you'll see these cars get REALLY DRIVEN! With free maintenance they probably get decent care but there is no accounting for how hard those miles may have been. And good re-sellers are very adept at making cars shine like new so who's to tell? If you need to stay in a budget, order it exactly how you want putting your personal touch in the process. You might take a hit on resale, but that is IF you resell it.
For what is worth, I had all but given up getting a MCS as my current car didn't sell for what I wanted to get. As its a 528iT - in it's own right a very capable ride, I just let my ordered one go (the moment I refused it!). My thoughts were totally changed after having the Bimmer in the shop and to my suprise, the only loaner available was a CR/W "Clown Car" MCS. It was to be only a day's repair but after driving the 2004 6-speed around for the day, I was thrilled not to be contacted that my car was ready and kept the Clown Car through the weekend! (thanks to Caller ID!)
The MCS was the best fun I've had in a car, well driving anyway. Awesome handling - even had my wife grinning ear to ear after showing her my new favorite sweeping U on a road we travel often. We're grandparents of 3 so when she doesn't put me in the doghouse making that turn INSIDE the white, actually enjoying the thrill, that says something. The Mini didn't protest at all that turn or anything else I threw at it. BTW... the 26 mpg it averaged the 250 miles I put on it was a big bonus!
I was a little amazed at the lack of respect given here to the power of this engine too. More then enough to make the car really scoot. The best mark of a well engineered perfomance car has to be balance... handling, power, driver feel etc. The Mini has that balance in spades.
Drive one for a while. Actually look around and see if you can't rent one somewhere. I suspect it will convince you the way no Maxima could ever do.
My thoughts at any rate.
