What's your Favorite hidden twisty to drive

No Dragon...just a fun backroad that you enjoy driving.
Mine is far from where I live now. Crystal Springs road in San Mateo. Doesn't look like much on the map but it can be a short "E" ride.

If I share my favorite with you, then you'll tell two people, and they'll tell two people, then so on and so forth. Then everyone will be on that road and it won't be fun anymore!

Actually we already had this discussion in the So Cal thread and decided that exact thing. Still fun to drive, but we just don't have a bunch of empty roads here. Unless of course, you drive at two in the morning.

Anything from the Palo Alto area to Skyline is sweet, but then get to Alpine from Skyline and head south through twisty, dark redwood forests to the coast. Just before you beach it, get some Artichoke soup and lollaberry pie at Duarte's... wow!

It's only a couple of miles long, but there's little traffic and it's soooo fun!

Yeah, I'll second that. Not such a backwater, but Willits -> Ft Bragg -> Leggett is a nice little detour off 101.

Arizona 89A

I had to chip in, since my alias is a road.
89A is the Alternate route that goes through Jerome, and Oak Creek Canyon.
The maps are cool (and I don't know how to link), but let's see pictures of hairpins and other twisty stuff!

Fitch, I grew up near there and all I can say is

Well, that and did you ever notice that short section of 35 between 280 and 92 has the perfect downhill right?

Compared to the Midwest, I'd think *any* road in New England would be a blast!

Laurel Mountains of PA

Many good roads all through the hills of SW PA. But a few names come to mind: Kentuck **** Road heading northwest out of Ohiopyle State Park and just down the road is another great one SugarLoaf Road heading south east out of the same state park. Good twists and turns not to mention up and down and all around!

Kirby Road in McLean, VA

If you're in Northern Virginia, Kirby Road between Route 123 and Old Dominion. Not too long, and not too fast, but great curves. Watch out for bicyclists.

Any road! But the best is Highlands down US 64 (toward Franklin) through the Gorge, after the Gorge take a shap right on Buck Creek to US 64(N) aka Cashiers Road, back to center of town. Then turn left on Horse Cove Road to the bottom and back to center of town.

This road has beautiful scenery, with waterfalls (two you can walk under), whitewater rivers running along side, and plenty of twisties. As close as you can get to the Dragon without being on it, plus beautiful scenery.

Hwy 74A from Asheville to Bat Cave / Lake Lure has this lovely little spot in it:

Another nice one we use as much as possible on our m2c2 club drives is Hwy 80 up to the Parkway:

Come drive the roads of WNC - Just watch out for the "new reveneuers"

Where is NC - 80? I have run US 276 from Mt. Pisgah, and that is great.

Hwy 80 runs north out of the Marion / Old Fort area (US 70). Not a lot of folks use it on everyday trips since it dead ends past the parkway. There are a few spots for passing also, just watch those last few turns; 10 mph/1st gear for sure Check out the link for more Hwy 80 pics http://www.state-ends.com/ncends/state/80.html

Yup 276 and also 215 are great roads, unfortunately a lot of folks know about them so they're kind of full come the weekends.

BTW, This is the best reference sources for roads in North Carolina that I've found http://www.ncroads.com/index.html

Hyway 421 from Shady Valley to Mountain City in Upper East TN! It's already a motoring destination so I don't mind giving that one up. I've driven the Dragon since I was 16 (long before it had a name) and I can say with complete confidence that 421 is even better. Ocassionally it's got some traffic on it, but I like to go on Sunday afternoon when most people are headed home as I am getting there.

A truely secret piece of paved heaven would be Houston Valley road. It's also in Upper East TN, but where?

Most of the roads near the TN/NC border are awesome. The less traveled roads are north of the GSMNP. (north of I-40)

Good thread.

Thanks for the info on NC 80. I have been on that when we came off the BRP after leaving Mt. Mitchell. I forgot what that highway was. I was surprised to see so many 18 wheelers going up that road. I figured it must be a shortcut to somewhere, since they can't be on the BRP.

When I was stationed at Ft. Huachuca, in Arizona, it was a blast to go from the fort to Tuscon the back way through Sonoita. Really a rugged area with a lot of curves. One day I'll take the MCS there.

You're killing me man, I-40

I almost got nailed last time we went to G-burg up I-40. I was moving out smartly, picked up someone that wanted to play, had a few minutes of fun before traffic picked up so I back off, he passed. Well, about 2 minutes later at the next exit, there was one of TN finest pulling out with the blues on going after him. I felt bad, but not that bad

I know you've taken the Foothills Parkway before, right??? Not bad if you can get it to yourself, but it's what 10 miles???

My favorite hidden twisty is destined to remain hidden because........it's part of my daily commute. Granted, it's not much by Dragon standards, but the fact that I get to tackle it every.....single......day makes it awfully sweet.
