Worried about your low mileage

There's just no end to the number of folks who want to oil my snake.
A vortex generator and a magnetic fuel separator. I guess I'll put them on the shelf in the garage next to my Fish carburetor (obscure Dennis Milleresque reference for the old folks and the auto-trivia buffs).
(For the gentle sarcasm impaired here is a pile of emoticons for your use:

Do NOT put more than three of the Vortex Generators in you intake. I installed three in my '02MCS a couple of years ago and found it extremely dangerous.
I had to stop every 20 miles or so and remove the gas cap so gasoline could gush out of the tank. They were saving more gas than I could burn.
There needs to be a boxed warning on that device!

Ignorance IS NOT Blissful!
Please, somebody, enlighten me...okay, at this particualr moment, I AM feeling like a dumb broad... I am mechanically challenged when it comes to modifications....what is that?... and what does it do?.... and would it make sense to put one on my MC?... and how much does it cost?.... and what kind of shop/mechanic has to install it?... (and can't you tell you got my curiosity piqued and got me all excited about better gas mileage and...you get the picture...)
Please be gentle....I am a fast learner.... Mick

A test for all the cynics. Get two 2-liter soda bottles and about a 3-in length piece of rubber hose to fit snugly over the bottle openings. Fill one of the bottles and attach the two bottles with the hose, full bottle down. Flip the bottles over and time how long it takes for the full bottle to gurgle through. Now twirl the full bottle to make the water spin like a whirlpool. Quickly flip the bottles over and time how long it takes. THE SPINNING VORTEX WATER PRACTICALLY FALLS RIGHT THROUGH!!!!! This PROVES that the Air Razor works! I have one on all my cars and I was so IMPRESSED that I made one for my ride-on lawnmower and now I can mow my yard in 15% less time! I'm also making one to fit in my mouth so that when I run, the vortex will help the air flow down my esophagus that much faster. I can hardly wait until my next 10k when I show up on the start line!

Poking at myself, well, I dish it out, and can take it back. If I'm gonna be "stupid" I better be tough also ...I don't mind, how am I going to learn if I don't ask? As an instructor, I tell my students there are no dumb questions except for the one you don't ask.
While I am not new to cars, I have become very interested in my MINI. It's kinda wierd that I used to treat a car as a machine to take me from point A to point B, not so with my MINI. I want to know more about them...
As for getting 34 mpg, for me, it's a style of driving: if I see the light ahead is red, traffic ahead of me and I know I will have to stop anyway, I don't rush to it...sometimes I'd even slip into nuetral and coast to it. By the time I get there, it has turned green and I still have enough momentum that I don't have to drop it into 1st to get going. Maintaining a steady speed on the turnpike instead of sudden accellerations and hard braking...open the windows and reduce the use of AC, unless it really is a hot day...and no mods on the engine.
Don't get me wrong, I do not drive like Miss Daisy is in the car (I not only deal with local traffic, I get the tourist ahead of me on a moped in the left lane and their buddy's in the right ...trying to resist the urge to have a "hood ornament" is tough ) and do 80-90 mph on the turnpike is a given...
I have also been told that the more mods you put on your engine could mean sacrificing milage for speed...I dunno, I have a stock car, so I have to take their word for it.
Anyway, morale still in the tubes....

My MA said that the OBC was way off on mileage. I can get up to 99.9 instantaneous MPG whle coasting to a stop.
I am going to have to be more careful to calculate mileage the old fashoned way. Miles driven/gallons put into the tank. I wonder if resetting the OBC would help?
Would do it on this tank but this one was a top off tank rather than a complete fill up. I am going to have to remind MrsDiff how to reset the trip odometer so that I don't get 650+ miles on the next tank.

look...bottom line dont buy these pieces of junk....just like those adverts in the back on the car mags that say "supercharge your car for only 69.95".... i know a guy who put one of these in his car....and the damn thing broke and almost got sucked into the engine!
its easier just to keep the maintenence up and lay off the lead foot attack

Yeah, it spikes way high because that is the instantaneous mileage and not your average mileage and if you go wot, mileage drops into the single digits. When you're off throttle and coasting you're not using any gas, hence the high mileage.
My OBC seems to be about correct in figuring my overall mileage after I reset it, though.
But yeah, these vortex generators are garbage for a modern car, I have heard they might help in a carb'ed car, but I'd be doubtful about that even..

The only way you should be calculating mileage is dividing the miles driven by the gallons of gas used.
You can check each time you fill but you would need to make sure the tank was filled exactly the same each time. The better way is to keep track over a longer period of time and average over several tanks of gas.
I have checked my car each time I refueled from the first day I had it. The trip computer has averaged 3.1 MPG high over that period with a range of around -1 to +6 from the manual calculation.
My calculations are at home (I'm at work now) but as I recall, my 2004 MCS/Works car has averaged around 23 MPG since the first day. I think the highest tank was somewhere around 28 or 29. I have never had the car on an extended highway trip. I drive the car somewhat conservatively.

...I guess I am like the quirky old auntie who is really smart but prone to "dingbat attacks"...you gotta love her...
I calculate mileage by dividing miles driven by gas in full tank. It's an old fashioned proven method and until someone changes the rules, 1 + 1 still equals 2....I forgot to also mention that the tires play a role in mileage (keep them at the correct inflation psi) and regular maintenance to keep your machine running at optimum...
I spoke with a mechanic at a local (non-MINI) dealership. He said these gadgets do work, but they put a strain on the engine by increasing the pressure inside it. You may wind up blowing out a gasket (or something, sorry, can't remember the exact term he used...) So, in the short run you save on gas, but make up for it with a possibile increase in service calls and maintenance...Mick
