R50/53 From 6th to 2nd !
#1
Mother effer! Son of a! I was driving home last night and i was having some fun with a friend of mine in a pontiac sunfire. We came to a spot on 80 where a cop usually sits, so we both slowed to 70. Then we saw no cop and i looked over and went to downshift from 6th to 4th but somehow missed and put it in second
Vroooooom the tach jumped to about 7000. Now i am scared i screwed something up. I kept fiddling around with the shifter to see how the hell I went from 6th to 2nd. Its actually easier to do than i think it should be. Anyhow after that i was driving with the radio off and trying to listen to the engine. I thought i heard something that was a little off, but yet again i have never really listened all that hard. Finally when the car was still i put it in neutal and hit the gas to about 3000 and it went vroom followed by a little put put put at the end. Didn't sound right to me. Almost like it was mis-firing or something. Could I have screwed something up? Im so afraid i did. I love this car more than anything. Help me

Your fine, the fuel would have cut off. Not to mention that at 70mph you're not too far off from 2nd's redline. So just as 8ball says, a momentary jump a couple hundred extra over redline won't hurt anything. Had you been going faster, say 90+, It'd be possible for problems, but not at 70mph. Heck, I regularly 60 in 2nd while accellerating.

Your Fine!
No worries!!!
And that pup put noise happens on everyones mcs, I think it's kinda cool lol.
So don't worry about it!
Personally At about that speed I change down to 3rd for quick acceleration, It's also easir not to put it in 1st! lol.
I did the 6th to 2nd at about 60mph and it shur is a kick in the butt ain't it.
Your car is fine and still loves you.

The rev limiter only protects the engine while accelerating or in other words while under power; there is nothing that will protect the engine if over-revved due to a missed downshift. It is possible to float the valves, that is to exceed the design limits of the valve springs ability to close the valve in time to avoid having the valve becoming very friendly with the piston thereby bending or breaking a valve or valves. If you floated the valves, and I doubt you would at 7,000 rpm as the JCW kit for the MCS bumps the red line to 6,950 rpm and it’s my understanding that they use your old valves and valve spring in the new JCW head so there is no help there. If you had floated any valves you would know it. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over your minor transgression.
