In the center on my dash board just in front of the vent the is a little red light. It hasn't ever lit up, thank goodness....... but for the life of me I can't find a discription in my owners manual.

What is it?

 

It's a sensor for the automatic climate control.

 

That's the nuclear alert warning light... let's all hope it never goes off

 

It is used to detect external light/heat and is called a solar sensor. It is used only with the automatic heating/cooling system referred to as the IHKA system.

 

It will only light up if you ever are not having fun in your MINI. When lit it will cause renewed interest and curiosity and will therefore immediately go out again.

 

Oh, I thought those were the 2 little black holes on the console.
The manual says never to block 'em.

I kinda thought it was for a GPS or maybe a rain sensor.

I had the reddish-purple "button" climate control sensor on my 05 mcs. It looked cool and mysterious. Now, on my 06 MCS, the same "button" is black and the surface is not smooth like the 05. Anyone have/notice this? I haven't looked too close so maybe its some sort of packing wrap. I don't want to start yanking or scratching at it. Anybody?

Yeah, I was about to say the same thing. My new '06 just has a little black ball thing, and I thought it was supposed to be the reddish button type thing, but it appears that other 06'ers that have Auto AC have the same thing... So I guess they scrapped it or something?!

This is the periscope hole cover, so the hamsters under the bonnet can see what the traffic conditions are.

 

Or it could be the spy device used by "The Man" to see what these Mini people are really like.
