I found my replacement on eBay.
Microfilter that is. It's been 16 months and 21k miles since I changed my in-cabin filter, also known as the "MICROFILTER". Man, was it ever skunky. Very simple to R&R this important filter. Fortunately I don't use the AC that often (I'm more of an open windows guy, plus I don't live down south) so I wasn't getting the bad smell that others have experienced, but I knew it was time.
The filter is item #1 in this sketch from realoem.com.
I found my replacement filter on eBay for 11 bucks, carbon version #64311496711.
I think this is going on my maint schedule as an every 12 months item. If I did use my AC more I would probably change this every 6 months or so.

ScottinBend and dix, got it on eBay, no dealer. It's like anything else on Ebay, they turn up every so often.
KnottyMan, the number is correct, 64 31 1 496 711.
polizei, shoooooie, 3 years and 50k miles? I'd probably wear gloves and a mask when I change it!
For those that don't know where it's located, just look under your glove box. You'll see a flat cover. The two clips you can see are somewhat easy to release, the two clips you can't see will be in the same position but on the back edge. Just wrap your fingertips over the clip edges and pry them buggers loose.
The filter will need to be firmly pulled down and out. Note the position of the filter as it comes out. When sliding the new filter in, it will need to be done with firm upwards pressure. A little swearing may help, but is not necessary. I was able to complete the process without a single utterance!

There are 2 different filters
1 is charcoal activated - the other is just a filter.
The charcoal is more than the plain filter.
Just be sure to compare apples to apples
If you replace yous with a non OEM be sure to install in the correct direction (the OEM will only "bend" one way)
The BOSCH charcoal have an "air flow arrow"
The air flows down through the filter.
MAN mine wase BAD !!!

No. Description Supplement Qty From Up To Part Number Price Notes
01 MICROFILTER/ACTIVATED CARBON CONTAINER 1 64316930349 ENDED
01 MICROFILTER/ACTIVATED CARBON CONTAINER 1 64311496711
01 MICROFILTER 1 64316930351 ENDED
01 MICROFILTER 1 64311496710
You'll see that part number ending in 711 is the carbon one. That's the one I bought, and that's what was in the car as well.
As you probably know you can have eBay send you an email when one goes up for auction.

Then you type in what you're looking for in the search line.
When it comes back with zero hits it will say at about the middle of the screen: Try These Alternatives - Save this search to Favorites.
Click on that and it will take you to a page where you can have eBay email you for up to a YEAR!
Have fun shopping....Les
