R50/53 What it means to "Motor"
#26
Wow. When I started this thread I felt all "warm and fuzzy" now I feel a little..:impatient .
But that is what 'community' is about. One person's motoring is another person's driving.
I think the MINI marketing is brilliant too (as an ex-marketing/advertising guy AND a consumer AND a MINI enthusiast).
BUT, when 'they' strike a nerve/chord that resonates across a spectrum of people, cultures, etc. I think is really, really awesome.
But what I feel really, really happy about is finding my MINI and all that goes with it (be it motoring, modding, or blogging on NAM).
M'kay, I feel all 'warm and fuzzy' again.

Oh, we're just funnin' here. We agree, we disagree, we ***** and we moan. Bottom line, we all love MINI's (and most of us own one or two).
Back on topic. I like to Motor. MINIUSA may have used the term as part of an ad campaign but its a convenient or apropos way to describe the feeling we get or the phenomena we experience with our MINI's. What's wrong with that?
As far as Chow's wounds, don't worry, he's got his shin guards on all the time and his POINTED steel toes can be seen flashing around on occasion. He can take it and he can give it!

Motoring is the enlightened form of driving. It is about exploration, discovery and exhilaration. MINI is the perfect car for exploration.
Rest assured, I can go explore places you cannot in your MINI
What this really is is .... really good MINI marketing. You gotta give them kudos for making up stuff like this.

in sporty SUV's. X3 wasn't even recommended??!
wayda go, chows!
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Toyota Rav4 outranks luxury SUVs costing as much as $13,000 more in a new round-up of mid-sized crossover SUVs by the magazine Consumer Reports.
The Rav4, which was redesigned for the 2006 model year, earned a Top Pick.
The BMW X3 was the second-place finisher in terms of overall road-test scores, but it didn't earn a recommendation because of its poor predicted reliability.
The magazine also tested the Nissan Murano, Acura RDX, Infiniti FX35 and the Mazda CX-7.

BTW, not only is "motoring" good MINI Marketing, but I give them credit for:
- Youification (oh yeah, that one is unique)
- Bonnet strips (lets "imitate real racing stripes")
- Bonnet
- Boot
- Silencer
- Dampers
- and all those other Brit terms no American would be caught dead using except .... for one of the BEST marketing/advertising agencies around

Even though mine's a Mini, it has a Hood, a Trunk (or "hatch"), a Muffler... the only Boot is the one in the back that covers my foot when it's cold!
It is fun to use the Brit terms though, and "boot" is better than "hatch", I must admit.
I've even been toying around with repainting the MiniSupportVehicle (Honda Odyssey) with a white roof, but my wife is saying "no" to the hood stripes - didn't want 'em on the mini either for that matter. We definitely "motor" in that vehicle too, but we also "drive", and "slog", and "go".

What does itmean to "motor" unfortunately what it means to "motor" is something so unique so pure that you can describe it with words but you know it when you find it. Now I can't tell you what it means, however I can take you for a ride through the twisties, wave to fellow motorers as we pass them, stop off at a club meet share a meal with instant friends, hit some more twisties, pick up some groceries, answer some questions for the crowd that has gathered around your MINI (note I didn't say car), take the long way home and wave to the kids in the nighborhood that all stop playing and run out to wave as they hear you burble in. Maybe then you'll understand the differance.
Some poeple get it some people don't. For some there is a little more to it, others a little less. It is NOT just a marketing scheme. It is not something that can be acurately verbalized. Its also something personally I take seriously, there is a reason I have Motor On atop all my posts and proudly displayed as a badge of honor on my bumper. For those that don't get it, I'm sorry, you're missing out on something special, for those that do get it well....
