R50/53 Get a sunroof or not to get a sunroof?

I opted not for the sunroof due to the perforated sunscreen and its inability to totally block out the sun. I also don’t like the aesthetics of the large dark glass panel on the white roof. That being said I have had a number of other automobiles with sunroofs and have found them to be a worth while option.

>>Reasons not to go with the sunroof:
1) The sunroof adds about 45 lbs to the car in the worst possible spot (furthest away from the ground). So if you're interested in the best possible handling, don't get it.a<<
54 Lbs... AND anyone that is interested in the BEST possible handling will get the sun roof and replace it with the new carbon panel roof now being offered. That gets rid of that awful STEEL roof over your head. So have fun with your sun roof and if you don't like it---carbon it.
>>2) IMO the sunroof is very noisy at highway+ speeds.<<<
Yea, like a race car, fun fun fun...
>>3) I live in sunny FL and didn't like the fact that it doesn't have a built in solid shade (just a perforated one that blocks out only a little light).<<
I guess it's just personal preference, cause I live in sunny FL too.
I think the perforations are just about right for me.
So as you say, to each his/her own...

>>thus u get the black top
I personally don’t care for the black top. I think it looks sharp, but I went with white to help keep the heat down in the car. And my biggest concern with the sunroof is the perforated sunscreen and its inability to totally block out the hot summer sun. I have a sunroof in my X5 and like it in that vehicle just fine.

I skipped the sunroof in the first MINI and probably will do so in the second. Miami is too hot in the summer to be able to fully enjoy it and based on my previous ownership experience of 2 cars with it, at some point I stopped opening them altogether.
The sunroof is nice if you live in a more favorable climate where A/C is rarely needed or it is mostly cool and dry year round.
I think the panorama concept is neat as far as sunroofs go, but the lack of a solid sunshade is a blatant design oversight (Or perhaps a bean counter's decision) in the part of MINI.
I might still get it, but the added weight, cost and interior heat still keep me from going with it.

Skin Cancer, Nasty air w/ particulate matter , alergies, structural integrity, noise/rattles, solar heating in hot climates, UV effect on leather/plastic, excess weight , kids on overpasses dropping bricks on pasiing cars to pass the boring summer evenings: Lots of good resons NOT to have a sunroof in the 21st century.
But since when did any of this stop someone who just had t have a sunroof or a convertable.
I've had a Boxster since 1998 that has had the top down 2 times so I am not the best personto advise you!
PS. MY Cooper S w/o a sunroof is perfect for me. Lot's of room, lot's of glass & I never fear for a stray bricks!!!
Just kidding! Go w/ your heart in matters of cars.

>>Hmm, I still have yet to make up my mind.

>>I currently live in Oklahoma so it can get fairly hot out. I rember my black leather interior in my 3000GT burning my but when I forgot to put the sunshades in. How bad will the MINI be with a sunshade in? Isn't the Sunroof tinted, and have UV protection, and what is this talk about melting interior?
>>
>>I am getting the black roof so the sunroof would not be noticable, and I am 6'2" and the MINI I test drove with the sunroof seemed like it had plenty of head room.
>>
>>I am going to be sending my order to my dealer tonight so I got a couple hours to think abou it.
Hola from Guadalajara, Mexico.
I had to decide between getting the Union Jack Flag on a White roof or getting a Sunroof. Tough decision, i opted for the later, but needed to change to black roof, looks very neat and like the feel. I've had my Mini for a month and haven't melted as of yet  Guadalajara Mexico is a very sunny place, but don't feel the heat with my auto AC on, believe sunroof + shades (included) filter sunshine just fine.
I would go with sunroof on a black roof.
Hope my advise helps... Regards from Mexico. Esteban

Soon this question will go into a tri-facta, meaning, oh my dear what do I pick, roof, sunroof, or open air, and then in 06 it will be ragtop or hardtop.
arent MINI"S great so many choices
we are an unique crowd!
Have a super 4th, celebrate your freedoms the best way possible, slide thru some curves, VIVA the priviledge to choose.

I'm concerned about weight, too, but I'm also going to be driving the car stock for a while after I get it and would enjoy the sunroof as it exists now. I figure that by the time I get comfortable with some mods, there will be a) a lightweight, replacement, manually-operated sunroof assembly and/or b) a cf panel with which I can replace it if I become absolutely psychotic about the 54lbs in the roof. Chances are that any kit would be a replacement for an existing sunroof anyway, so I could put it in myself instead of having to have the roof cut. In the interim (starting eight months from now), I'll enjoy the stock sunroof.
