I love the cup holder. It stays because the two that are built in are to small.

Taking it off was my first mod .

It's useful, but I don't like the way it looks or the way it gets in the way of things.

I at first wanted to take it off, but know that it's been on for a year or two with it on I can't live without it.

The other cupholders in the front have too small of a clearance. What's up with that?

Keep it !!

Nice place for your 20 oz bottle of h2o. And when you're not thirsty, makes a handy place to store your sun glasses.

My wife and I found when we first bought our '05 MCS that it perfectly holds the complimentary bottle of champagne from BMW!

On a non-alcoholic note, it's a great place for an MP3 player to perch, along with phones, etc.

It's funny to me how German engineers seem to be baffled by the whole cup holder thing. I curently drive a 00 Benz E320 that has this over engineered swing out deal that has one holder that will only fit something small and the other does not have any stability. It makes me wonder what size beverage they use as the design mule for these things?

At first I hated the sight of it and asked my MA if I could have it deleted from my order. He said the dealer could remove it when it came in. We forgot about it on the day of delivery. Too much excitement doncha know. Now I'm glad because I use it to hold bottled water or my GPS when I'm motoring and need a map. It's like Ugly Betty; grows on ya.

LOL. Both my 99 and 2003 Benz's had that same contraption! Reminded me of a Rube Goldberg invention, which I think was designed to provide your crotch liquid cooling in case you got too excited from the quick turn you just made. Of course, if you had a cup of hot coffee there, well, nvm.

Be careful with that holder. You want to make certain any drink that gets put there has a VERY secure top. I put a soda from Burger King in there, hit a bump in the road, and now my AC controls stick whenever it gets warm, and the eject button on the CD player sticks from time to time also.

That cup holder is CRAP....be warned....

Penyen, if you want help removing it, bring me a 6 pack of beer, and I'll pop that thing right off for you. I have the tools...

Try spraying it with good quality silicone spray.

sorry to hijack....

LynnEl, will spraying the switches with silicone spray get that gunk off? If so, can you recommend where I can pick some up? Hardware store, auto parts store? You would be my HERO if this will help. On hot days it really is a bummer.

Thanks for the advice....

My '03 came with the MiniFini cup holder. It's great, I wouldn't think about taking it off.

I took that thing off as soon as I could. I keep telling myself I'll use it on long trips, but I've already done three without it, one with a passenger even, and managed just fine. I learned my lesson on another car to not bring liquids into the car that don't have a screw-top, because the way I take corners, those plastic tops at Mickey D's aren't keeping anything in, no matter how big the cupholder is!

I've put 16 oz water bottles in the "little" cupholders just fine! And the third one in the back is good for bottles that are a little bigger (I'm used to reaching around because my old car had sturdier cupholders in the same place as the MINI). But all that's just my own personal cupholder preference!

Even the mini MINI insulated cups are a pain to use in the twin cup holders. The big holder look just like what it is, an after thought. But it hold my coffee cup every morning on the way to work. Holds my coke can on the way back from the beach. Splashes stuff from both all over my dash. Beats holding stuff between your legs.

Maybe it's because we are the only nation in the world that MUST have a ginormous cupholder..
Cars are made to drive...If your going to enjoy a cup of coffee, sit down somewhere and enjoy the scenery..

I've done it before myself. Home Depot or any hardware or auto parts store sells silicone spray. I say good quality because I once bought some cheapy stuff and it really stunk, as in smell. It comes in a spray can. Just spray it where the stuff sicks and wipe off what drips.

Thank you! My response was going to be "Because the Germans take driving seriously".

I take driving seriously, too. I also take being thristy seriously. A cupholder allows me to do both at the same time.
