Just got an '07 cabrio as loaner...some questions

I'm an R56 owner and my today i received a 2007 cabrio cooper s as a loaner. It is very different from my R56 in many ways and since I don't have the manual, I was wondering if any of you could answer these questions.

1) On the left stalk, the button only switches between current speed and current outside temp. It doesn't show me fuel consumption, average speed, range on tank, etc. Is this normal? If so, where do you see all the extra info?

2) Convenience opening doesn't seem to work. Push once, driver door unlock, push again, passenger's side door unlocks. Push and hold again...nothing.

3) The computer on the big speedo only shows the time and the trip meter. is it supposed to show anything else?

Do I need to know anything special when opening the top/closing it?

Thanks so much.

1. Sounds like no on-board-computer
2. 3rd push should open the sunroof, 4th push the top, but i think that's only if it's programmed because one car I know does not do that.
3. Not w/o OBC.

Convenience opening is finicky -- make sure you're holding the button down for a little while -- the steps you describe are the right ones.
AND this is a feature that may have been disabled by the dealer.

Nothing magic about opening/closing top. Just make sure it's open as much as possible and enjoy your short-lived open-top motoring

Thanks guys! I don't think this vehicle is programmed for convenience opening with the remote. can I still do convenience opening with the key in the door?

Is the OBC not standard on these vehicles? If it were there, where would it be?

Nope - no convenience opening with the key - closing only with the key.

OBC isn't something you can "see".. it's just a feature set (including the things you noted were missing - average and instant fuel consumption, etc.) that appears when you press the button on the stalk that you mentioned.

They stopped programming the convenience features on the Cabrios a while ago(top down, windows down, everything down) Unfortunately, on the Cabrio, it took away the windows down & sunroof opening feature which would have been nice to keep. My 04 build Cabrio had it until the body control module went south. They would not reprogram it

dealer has to program keys

When I got my cabrio two weeks ago the convenience opening did not work either. The owners manual described the feature so I went to the dealer and they reprogramed the keys. It took about 15 minutes but now it works flawlessly. One strange thing is that neiher the sales agent nor the service manager knew about this. It was until I asked one of their garge workers that he knew about the feature and programmed it in a flash.
regards,
Xavier

I see you are from Mexico, Xavier. My dealer would not reprogram mine. As I recall, it was a safety issue here & they stopped allowing it. Oh, well, it's the good ol' USA

It puts a good strain on the battery to do that to often without driving in between. Taking the top down without the engine running that is.
When we picked up ours at the dealer it had enough to put it down in the showroom but they had to jump it to drive it out

OK... I can see it happening in a showroom... demo it a dozen times without starting the car. But how often is an owner going to do this?

I've heard stories before that some dealers refuse to enable full convenience opening, while some (like mine) will do it without blinking an eye. What a country we have. Guns for anyone, but everyone is worried about being hurt or killed by a remote convertible top.

So does anyone know for sure whether the feature has been officially nixed? It's such a great feature.

My MA told me it runs the battery down too quickly, using that feature. I guess it's not programmed on my key, because I tried it a couple of times and nothing happened (just for kicks).

Confused

I'm not sure if we are talking about the same feature but my 2007 MCS Cabrio will open into a sunroof position
if you press and hold the key a second time (first time will unlock the doors) and if you press it a third time it will drop the top completely.
I use this feature quite often to convince non-MINI owners that it has a voice prompt that will enable the MINI to drop the top upon command.

My body control module failed last Fall so of course everything had to be reprogrammed. When I asked them to do the complete drop top & windows open, I was told that they could no longer enable that feature because of safety concerns. I don't know Were they pulling my leg

I just got mine and asked my MA why it wasn't enabled. He said they'd be more than happy to program it when I came in.

Unfortunately, I've got no reason (or time) to go back...

So you have "one-press unlock" of both doors and the boot AND can lower the top with the remote on a 2007? That's great - I'm jealous.

Both of our 2006 Cabrios can drop the top from the remote, but when I asked the dealer to have them programmed so that pressing the remote once unlocked both doors and the boot, I was told that setting was no longer available.

You called it CUTE!!!

Every few weeks, someone starts a new thread to complain about people calling their MINI cute.

Maybe you can test drive one of their new Cabrios and then test the key to see if it works, if it does then you can ask them why it works on the new ones.

Try a different dealer, it doesn't make sense to me that a brand new Cabrio will do it but a reprogram can not be done by the dealer.
Unless its some sort of weird local law.

I can see a safety issue if one button click opens both doors (someone can jump in the passenger side when you unlock your door) but I really don't see any safety issue with clicking for the top to come down. There is such a delay too...at least on mine.

Yeah, I'm not buying "safety issue" for convenience opening. Not for a second do I buy it. That's total BS. If they had "convenience closing"... maybe that's a safety issue... but they don't...

It's not a safety issue, it's a liability issue. A couple of years ago there was one (maybe more) threads regarding inadvertent & unknown opening of the top when the weather turned wet and ruined some interiors. Once in a while when I go out to Stirling, I find the sunroof open and I chalk it up to something in my pocket pressing and holding the button. I still have it and don't worry about it when I am parked away from home, because I am generally too far from the car for the transmitter to function without use of the palm/chin antenna.

I had heard that version before, also. And have heard other folks talk about inadvertent opening of windows and sunroof... my office is far enough from my parking space that it couldn't happen to me... and hasn't happened anywhere else to me... but I can see how it COULD happen in certain situations...
