odd noise from my mini s

I was stopped at a light today and heard a loud noise coming from the front of my mini. It sounded and felt like the car was sitting at 3000 RPMs and a first I thought my foot might be touching the accelerator while it was out of gear. However that was not the case also the car was idling at 1k so it wasn't the engine. My second thought was a truck behind or next to me. Nope. So I shut the car off the noise went away. Start her back up and same noise. It lasted for a few seconds then there was a click in the dash and no more vibration or noise. It only happened once and only for a few moments with no warning light, any ideas? Power steering fan? cooling fan? Small forest type animal in the intake for the supercharger?????
