HELP me keep bmw from boning another

okay so.... I have an r53 that I have literally done everything except pull the motor out or clutch to. A friend of a friend was telling me about his neighbors 2008 MCS auto that has 34k miles but needs some work and bmw quoted her 4 9 0 0$$$$$$ for. So after I settled down from laughing hysterically i said to get me a list and I can possibly save her $$ and do it over a few weekends.

List: turbo oil supply line $916
oil filter housing gasket :$1200
16" conti's $930
alignment $150
Fuel injector clean $190
oil filter housing gasket / turbo line $ 1476

Says parts :1400
Labor: 3027
Tax: 300

I mean...... Wtf?!!!! First couple parts I looked up I already saved her 1500$.....
Thoughts anyone? Lol. I rebuilt another guys 2006 MCS with a supercharger.... Just haven't done a turbo one yet, so is it kinda like working on the r53 or wayyyyyyyy worse or? This lady loves this car but is about to sell it as is, seems like I could help

Yea, buying parts online and doing the work yourself or having an indy shop will save you lots of $.

For the turbo feed line use the kit from Detroit Tuned - $99.

http://www.detroittuned.com/detroit-...-oil-line-kit/

It will never leak again. It can be a DIY job. I did mine as a preventive measure when I upgraded to the JCW turbo. Maybe a ~$500 install at a independent shop.

Tires for $960 wow. That is at least $200-$300 over a dedicated tire place like Discount Tire.

Fuel injector cleaning is a waste of money. You can probably pour the same stuff into the gas tank for less than $20. And because the car is direct injected it won't do anything for cleaning carbon buildup on the intake valves.

The oil filter gasket is a common failure. While there ask about cost on replacing the thermostat housing and gasket. Also a common failure.

Dealer prices are always going to be high but they come with a warranty. Are you able to offer one?

Most independent shops guarantee the work that they perform.

The work that I perform on my car is self insured. In the rare cases that I help out a friend then yes I would also stand by my work.

I've worked at the dealer before and I'm not surprised at these prices. When working at an aftermarket performance shop and looking at what the cost of actual parts were, I laughed at how much they'd charge people vs. what we would charge. We have the oil filter housing gasket here, both turbo oil lines here (recommend replacing both while doing the one), and anything else you need here. For tires, I always use tirerack.com for decent prices and $150 alignment is pretty high. For my 4 wheel alignment I pay about $80 and that's what we charged for alignments at the performance shop I worked at. Check out our R56 tech articles for estimated times on repairs and a step by step process to fix them if needed. Let me know if you have any questions.

OP, where are you located. We might be able to point you in the right direction. Oh, and yes, reputable service shops offer warranties.

my comment was directed at op to see if he had thought about what helping someone entails. If for example in his fixing one thing he screws the pooch on something else is he capable of dealing with that?
But good to know your policy, are you near Portland Oregon?

Buy a DT Turbo Oil Line Super Kit- $165 and comes with the feed line, and oil filter housing seal (as well as a slew of other components needed to do the job)

Discount tire or Tirerack for the Continentals, you'll probably be about $650 mounted and balanced.

Fuel injector cleaning? LMFAO....

Alignment: $80-125 is average

We charge $450 to do a super kit install plus coolant and cleaning supplies, so if you are doing the job in your driveway you can figure out the labor cost for her.

Sounds like just over a grand of work if you help her out and she goes to Discount or Tirerack for tires.

One definitely needs to be careful working on a friends car. You definitely take on some liability. The thing I worry about is frying something electrical.
