I agree with MINIclo, as the writer probably only likes big American V8 cars and anything else is wimpy to them -- they probably like compromises, such as going fairly fast on straights and only moderately fast on curves, such as with a Mustang -- just like that guy on Tuner Transformation from Canada who does the body work and hates MINIs and thinks they are all just advertising, but loves Mustangs and big American SUVs with 20 inch wheels! There are some (a lot ?) of those type of people out there, and it will take some time for the MINI to be established here and accepted as a performance car by "those" people. But it will happen. Just a matter of time. I'm stereotyping here, but hey that's my opinion. Seriously.

If you know/understand anything at all about Minis/MINIs the gender-appeal question is simply a non-starter, thus displaying a bit of ignorance on the part of the writer/mag. Minis have always enjoyed an insanely broad (not a female reference:smile: ) appeal. They are cars for the discerning tuner, for the chic/hip, for the commuter, and for everyone in between. That's our car's heritage and that's where it stands....we can't un-do that fact of automotive history. So hooray for MINIs and for all MINI owners, whoever they are and however they may motor!!!

I think that cover shot of MPH says it all. My experience at the newsstand is that any rag that relies on bikini shots to sell copy is geared to an adolescent male audience.
When will stateside car magazine publishers wake up and realize that a woman clad in a driver's suit is just waaay sexier than a woman in a skimpy swimsuit could ever hope to be!? And way more fun in a MINI, or a Mini, to boot!

Of course, the reality is that a lot of the drivers are middle-aged, and about as hip as a Lawrence Welk polka album, i.e. not very.
But I think that really just speaks to the fairly universal appeal of the Mini. You can be a woman and buy it because it's "cute..." but you can also be a woman who buys it because it's a performance car that doesn't feel like a male ego compensation tool. Sure, some men will buy it because they're (for lack of a better word) metro, but a lot of them will simply want a quick, well-made car which is still good as a daily driver.

1. A careful reading of your last paragraph would seem to imply that it's not okay for a guy to buy one because it's "cute."
2. Would it be okay for a guy to buy one because it's cute, if he promises to sell his Lawrence Welk collection ASAP?
Seriously, I have been know to pull into parking lots, look around, and say (out loud!), "Yes, Tillie, you're the cutest one here"!
Fifty-four years old, happily married for 23 years, very secure in my manhood, and very pleased to be driving the cutest car in Sacramento county. (Unless there's a yellow Elise in town that I don't know about.)

A cowboy goes into a bar and orders a drink. While he's sipping his drink, a woman walks in and sits down beside him. She orders a drink, and while she's waiting, she turns to the cowboy and asks, "So - you a real cowboy?"
He replies, "Well, ma'am, I've spent my whole life dealing with cows, fixing fences, riding horses, doing chores. So I'd guess I'd hafta say yes - I'm a real cowboy."
The women replies, "You don't say? Well, me - I'm a lesbian. I spend all my time thinking about women - when I wake up, when I take a shower, when I eat... all the time. Never think about nothing but women."
The cowboy nods his head and says, "You don't say?"
They sit and sip their drinks a spell and then a city fellah comes into the bar, walks up and sits down on the other side of the cowboy. He orders a drink, and then turns to the cowbay and asks, "So - you a real cowboy?"
The cowboy replies, "Well I always thought I was. But I just found out - I'm a lesbian!"

Really....so many folks out there have NO clue about our MINIs. They either think they get super-high mileage or are hybrids or "cute" or whatever. When they actually see the fantastic handling by driving one themselves, their minds are blown. Don't let the ignoramus who dissed the MINI get you down.
