I ready to start fabbing the ladder racks. Your choice aluminum, polished stainless, and for the real stand out ....titanium! Really folks i'm serious I've made racks for just about every brand out there. I do think Mini would be wise to offer a diesel version, fleet sales alone would justify it.

I think it's a neat idea and quite cool, even if I'm not in the market for one-- I have a full-size pickup for when I need a pickup truck.
I wonder if that's the real problem with this sort of thing? It's cool, and I look at it and think, "Yeah, I want one", but I wouldn't actually buy one. Subaru recently killed the "Baja" (which was basically the renewed version of their "Brat" that didn't survive through the '80s...). Dodge couldn't sell Rampages, which was basically this same idea except starting with an Omni instead of a Mini. Even stepping a bit larger, the El Camino is a dead product, the Ranchero died long before.
All of them were cool ideas, but apparently they just don't sell so good here in the US.

I had two of those VW pickups, they were just about the most versatile vehicle I've owned. Fun to drive, fairly quick, got great mileage and hauled everything I needed them to, including moving me twice. I also towed a boat once with mine, but that wasn't really a good idea due to the size of said boat - a smaller, lighter one would have been fine.
The only real negative about them and any small car based pickup truck is the lack of cabin space caused by the forward leaning or vertical back window. If they could style it to give more cabin space, it would work for more people, as it is, you have to be somewhat height challenged to comfortably drive one.
In the photochops or even real renditions of a new MINI pickup, the same problem would be there, even in a longer wheelbase version like a Clubby.

I told my wife yesterday that our next vehicle was going to be the Subaru. Don't really need the 4 doors, but the rear pickup area is perfect for the hauling occasions when things just don't fit in the trunk or hatchback. I owned a Ford Ranger for 6 years and I really miss it. Much more than my Honda Element which could haul quite a few things but had a roof. But a Mini truck, that would be quite the solution....

When starting this car search process a year ago, one of the things I contemplated was a small pickup. But I quickly learned that there is no such thing any more. All the pickups have grown and grown, and the Ranger-like vehicles of 10-15 years ago, which might have been useful to me, are gone.
So I bought a Clubman....
But I like the way this looks...like it a lot.
