R55 Automatic impressions, mpg and more?
#53
Anyone in the automatic world discovering any new twists?
I'm finding that with a mixture of very local (suburban) driving and some brief highway miles that I seem to be getting about 31 mpgs. Definitely does much better when it's highway all the way or predominantly.
Have been playing around with the manual shifting (on the stick shift not the paddles) and am wondering if any of you out there have noticed a difference positively or negatively w/re mpgs? I guess it really would depend upon how well one timed one's shifts.
P.S. Have to add that the air conditioner has been on for the majority of miles driven...don't know if this matters.
I was expecting to have better mpgs for the mixture of highway and local.

Hi Otra, That's approximately the same mpg (31) that I'm seeing in town. The brief highway miles definitely tend to boost it up a bit. The other day I drove approx. 100 miles on the interstate (avg mph 67) and got 40.7 mpg according to the OBC! I loved it! I have a non-S automatic. I haven't fooled with the paddle shifters yet but will let you know about that if I do. I adore the sport button however.

I'm averaging about 28-29 hand-calculated mpg over 3600 miles. I'm getting close to 400 miles/tank and there's usually 50 miles of highway each tank plus a good amount of suburban 50-60mph roads. The last tank I was really playing w/the paddle/shifter - I think I prefer the shifter in the middle - I always know where it is (unlike the paddles) and it's set up intuitively like a sequential gearbox.
Mileage is about what I expected but I'm hoping it will inch up around the 5k mark if there's any kind of engine "loosening" that might happen.
